Black Twitter Reacts To Jorja Smith Making It To Spotify’s Amapiano Grooves Playlist Cover. Amapiano is a style of house music that emerged in South Africa in 2012. Amapiano is a hybrid of deep house, jazz and lounge music characterized by synths, airy pads and wide and percussive basslines. Even during the pandemic, amapiano has persisted as the country’s top genre, according to prominent South African artists and DJs.

Following how big the sound is at the moment, British singer and songwriter Jorja Smith found herself being inspired to drop an amapiano single, however, that did not sit well with the yanos fans and artists as they felt she could have collaborated with one of the pioneers of amapiano. That did not end there, music streaming platform Spotify put Jorja as the cover of Amapiano grooves playlist, and it completely made black Twitter not stay down.

One user reacted to Jorja being made the cover of amapiano grooves saying, “You know what I get why people are mad because this ain’t it. Now people who are not familiar with the sound will think amapiano comes from the UK. The face of these playlists should be the pioneers themselves bo Kabza etc.

“south africans must gatekeep amapiano. they must be the ones getting recognition, getting opportunities and getting PAID for the genre,” another user wrote. Check out more reactions:

it’s not gate keeping. what jorja made isn’t amapiano

if we don’t speak on it they’ll ruin this proudly south african lifestyle of ours https://t.co/4QmaSYYpc5

She shouldn't have said "Piano to the world" look now. O phaphile ngwanabatho. The song would've been received well in Sout'a if people thought it had Amapiano elements but not Amapiano. pic.twitter.com/VjjOSuihep

I like that american artists are trynna jumping on the amapiano train but I need them to operate Amapiano producers from South Ah if they're serious.

nobody has replaced americans as the face of hip hop, nobody has replaced nigerians as the face of afro beats. nobody should replcae SAns as the face of amapiano

“mang mang stole drill and yall didnt say anything”

we don’t own drill, not our fault they didn’t protect theirs. amapiano is ours, we’ll fight for it

“I met Guilty(the producer) when I went over to Port Antonio in Jamaica for a writing camp in 2019. He’s so wonderful to work with and when we initially started the song, it was more a fall to the floor type beat. He’s shared Amapiano playlists with me before and then during the first lockdown in 2020, he sent me a version of the song like it is now. We then finished writing the song remotely, exchanging messages over WhatsApp with his girlfriend Abby who is also a writer. It’s all about someone who doesn’t deserve you and thinking wow, you really had all of my once, ew.”
