Sobzeen: “I Don’t Chase Every Trend” as He Uses Amapiano to Celebrate Nguni Culture

Amapiano has grown from a South African sound into a global movement, but for Sobzeen, the genre’s international success should never come at the expense of the culture that gave birth to it. The musician, whose real name is Zakhele Mbuyisa, is using his latest project, Nguni Tales, to introduce listeners to the history, identity and spirituality behind his music.

At 29, Sobzeen says his identity as an isiZulu-speaking man comes before his career as an artist. For him, Nguni Tales is about offering international audiences more than the infectious log drums and basslines associated with amapiano.

“I’m Nguni before I’m an artist. I asked myself – the world is dancing to our sound, but do they know who we are?” he said. “I wanted to give them more than log drums. I wanted to give them my grandfather’s stories, our pride, our warriors.”

The project also reflects a shift in Sobzeen’s mindset as he has matured within the music industry. Rather than constantly following popular sounds or seeking approval, the musician says he is now focused on creating music with purpose.

“When I started, I wanted to be accepted. Now, I want to be respected. I don’t chase every trend. I move with purpose. I understand the business, but will never sell my culture for clout,” he explained.

With Nguni Tales, Sobzeen aims to prove that modern amapiano and African heritage can exist together without compromising authenticity. He compares the genre’s modern dancefloors to traditional gatherings around fires, where communities connected through music, dance and storytelling.

“Our ancestors already had dancefloors – around the fire, with drums. Amapiano is just the modern fire,” he said. “I kept the bassline and log drums heavy for the clubs, but I put prayer and history on top. So, your body dances but your spirit listens.”

Sobzeen also hopes the project encourages audiences outside South Africa to learn more about Nguni heritage. He wants listeners in cities such as London and New York to hear the music and become curious about the people, traditions and stories behind it.

The project’s visual identity reinforces that message, featuring traditional Nguni attire, shields and warrior symbolism. Sobzeen says every element was intentionally selected to reflect the strength and history represented in the music.

Ultimately, he wants Nguni Tales to leave listeners feeling connected, proud and inspired to explore their roots.

“I want them to walk away feeling proud and healed. I want you to feel like you were welcomed into our home,” he said.
