Award-winning Amapiano DJ and producer KMat believes the future of Amapiano lies in one thing above all else—innovation. As the genre continues to dominate South Africa’s music scene and expand across international markets, the talented artist says its greatest strength is its ability to constantly evolve through experimentation and fresh ideas.

The 26-year-old musician, whose real name is Koketso Mathabathe, recently shared her thoughts on the ever-changing landscape of South African dance music. According to KMat, one of the reasons Amapiano remains at the forefront of African music is because artists are never afraid to push creative boundaries.

“Our dance scene is multi-dimensional. No one literally knows what the landscape will look like in the next even year because everyone is so experimental. It’s a breeding ground for innovation of sound,” she said.

Her comments reflect the rapid evolution of Amapiano, a genre that has continuously reinvented itself through the emergence of different sub-styles and creative collaborations. Producers and vocalists alike continue to introduce new sounds while preserving the genre’s unmistakable identity.

KMat has played an important role in that evolution. She has earned recognition for her energetic DJ sets and distinctive production style, blending soulful melodies, infectious log drums, and vibrant rhythms into performances that keep audiences dancing. Her ability to balance musical innovation with crowd-pleasing energy has made her one of the leading female figures in a genre that has traditionally been male-dominated.

Over the past few years, KMat has performed at major festivals and events across South Africa while steadily building a loyal fan base through her original releases and collaborations. Despite the changing musical landscape, she remains committed to staying true to her artistic identity.

“I know my core, but I evolve as well. It’s important for one to stay relevant. I just try to incorporate my core elements as well,” she explained.

Beyond Amapiano, KMat is also looking to explore new creative opportunities through collaborations with artists from other genres. One of the collaborations she is particularly excited about involves Gqom, another influential South African dance genre.

“Yes, I love Gqom and I’d love to work with the guys in that scene,” she revealed, hinting at exciting possibilities for future cross-genre collaborations.

Fans can also look forward to seeing her return to Jägermeister Haus of Kühl, where she promises another unforgettable performance.

“I always strive to be electrifying and engulf people into the music. I want to paint out an electrifying journey,” she said.

Looking ahead, KMat revealed that her ambitions extend beyond music. She teased plans involving fashion, events, beverages, and fresh DJ mixes as she continues expanding her brand.

With her forward-thinking mindset and commitment to innovation, KMat continues to demonstrate why she remains one of the most exciting artists shaping the future of Amapiano. As the genre continues to evolve, she is determined to evolve with it while staying true to the sound that has made her one of South Africa’s standout talents.
