MaWhoo Sparks Debate After Claiming NSFAS Rejected Her Due to Low APS Score

Award-winning singer MaWhoo has caused a major stir on social media after revealing that she was allegedly rejected by NSFAS because of her low APS score. The statement quickly sparked heated debates online, with many South Africans questioning the accuracy of her claims and discussing the funding criteria used by the National Student Financial Aid Scheme.

The controversy began after a clip from an interview surfaced on X, shared by user @Burnerburnerac5. In the now-viral video, MaWhoo spoke about her educational journey and addressed long-standing rumors regarding her academic background. The singer stated that despite what many people believe, she did complete matric and performed well in school.

“I did really well in school. I know people often say I do not have a matric certificate, but that’s not true,” she explained during the interview.

However, it was her comments about NSFAS that drew the strongest reactions online. MaWhoo claimed that when she applied for student funding, she was not accepted because her APS score was allegedly too low. “Even at University level, you know NSFAS does not fund you if your APS is low,” she added.

Her remarks immediately triggered mixed reactions from social media users, with many arguing that NSFAS funding is largely based on financial need rather than only academic performance. Several users claimed her explanation contradicted known NSFAS criteria.

One user commented, “NSFAS has never rejected anyone for a low APS.” Another questioned her statement by writing, “What does well mean if your APS was low? Come on?”

Despite the backlash, MaWhoo continued sharing details about her personal journey and how music eventually changed her life. She revealed that she initially pursued teaching at university but later dropped out during her second year. According to the singer, her mother encouraged her to finish her studies, but her passion ultimately led her elsewhere.

She explained that she later attempted to return to university, but everything changed after receiving a direct message from DJ Maphorisa inviting her to work with him.

MaWhoo also opened up about her upbringing, sharing that she was raised by a single mother without the presence of a father. She spoke emotionally about how those experiences shaped her life and music.

The incident has once again shown how quickly celebrity interviews can ignite nationwide conversations online. While some people continue to challenge her NSFAS claims, others sympathize with her journey and applaud how far she has come despite personal struggles and setbacks.
