Major League DJz Call Out Studio “Camp” Culture as Amapiano Unity Comes Into Question

Amapiano’s spirit of unity is facing renewed scrutiny after influential duo Major League DJz shared a candid reflection on the genre’s growing internal divisions.

Weighing in on ongoing conversations about collaboration in South African music, the pair took to X (formerly Twitter) and wrote: “We could say same thing about Amapiano, this camp thing has taken a big toll on the genre 💔.”

Their statement immediately sparked widespread debate among fans and industry observers, many of whom believe the once tightly knit amapiano movement is beginning to mirror the factionalism that has affected other genres.

Over the past decade, amapiano has thrived on collaboration. Producers, vocalists and DJs frequently crossed paths in studio sessions, live sets and viral moments, creating a culture that felt communal rather than competitive. But as the genre has grown into a global force, some listeners argue that divisions — often described as “camps” — are becoming more visible.

One X user suggested that gatekeeping plays a role in limiting opportunities, referencing powerhouse producer DJ Maphorisa. “Piano has Gatekeepers unfortunately, if you don’t get along with Phori it’s chaai for you… you might struggle to get gigs,” the user claimed, hinting at the influence of industry relationships on bookings and business decisions.

Major League DJz were quick to clarify that their comments were not directed at any one individual. “This has nothing to do with Phori. It’s in general,” they responded, steering the conversation away from personal accusations and toward broader structural concerns.

Other fans shifted the debate to amapiano’s global positioning, arguing that the genre lacks singular breakout stars who can carry it internationally in the way afrobeats artists such as Tems, Burna Boy and Asake have done for their sound. According to some, amapiano’s strength — its collaborative DNA — may also be its challenge when it comes to building identifiable global icons.

Personality clashes were also cited as a factor. “The egos and arrogance are killing the game,” one user commented, reflecting a growing frustration among supporters who want to see the genre maintain its collective momentum.

The discussion underscores a pivotal moment for amapiano. While it continues to evolve sonically and dominate dance floors worldwide, conversations about unity, leadership and long-term sustainability are becoming increasingly prominent.

For Major League DJz, the message seems clear: preserving collaboration and openness may be key to protecting the culture that built amapiano into a global phenomenon.
