“CTIJF is bigger than just a festival, it is a cultural movement,” said Scorpion Kings—and with that single statement, the tone is set for a powerful musical moment where past, present, and future collide. This year, the iconic duo will bring their unmistakable amapiano energy to the Kippies Stage on March 27, as the 23rd annual Cape Town International Jazz Festival (CTIJF) officially opens its doors.

For decades, CTIJF has stood as a meeting point for musical dialogue. Rooted in jazz tradition yet always open to evolution, the festival has earned its reputation as Africa’s Grandest Gathering, celebrating not just sound, but culture, heritage, and artistic freedom. From classic jazz ensembles to boundary-pushing contemporary acts, the festival has always embraced music that speaks across generations.

This year, that conversation expands even further as Scorpion Kings step into the spotlight, carrying the pulse of amapiano onto a stage historically known for live instrumentation and improvisation. Their inclusion signals not a departure from tradition, but a natural progression—one that reflects how South African music continues to grow, adapt, and influence the world.

“For us as Scorpion Kings, it is exciting to bring amapiano into a space that has always celebrated jazz,” the duo shared. “You can really feel how sounds connect, and how new generations keep building on what came before.” Their words reflect a deep respect for the festival’s legacy, paired with confidence in amapiano’s place within the broader musical narrative.

Scorpion Kings is made up of DJ Maphorisa and Kabza De Small, two artists whose journeys converged through a shared obsession with sound and the dance floor. Individually, both had already carved out strong careers, but when they joined forces, the chemistry was undeniable. What began as collaborative studio sessions quickly evolved into a full-scale movement that helped define amapiano on a global stage.

Their discography tells that story vividly. Projects under the Scorpion Kings banner introduced a signature blend of deep log drums, layered melodies, and an emphasis on mood as much as movement. Albums such as Scorpion Kings and subsequent releases captured a pivotal moment when amapiano shifted from underground culture to mainstream force.

By stepping onto the CTIJF jazz stage, Scorpion Kings are doing more than performing—they are bridging eras, honoring roots, and proving that South African music, in all its forms, belongs on the world’s most respected stages.
