Nigerians React as Tyla’s Grammy Win Sparks Debate Over Best African Music Performance

Tyla’s victory at the 68th Annual Grammy Awards has ignited intense debate across social media, particularly among Nigerian music fans, following her win in the Best African Music Performance category. While many celebrated the South African star’s continued rise, others expressed disappointment and frustration over the outcome.

On Sunday night, the 24-year-old singer claimed the prestigious award for her hit single Push 2 Start, edging out a strong field dominated by Nigerian heavyweights. The category featured major names including Davido, Omah Lay, Ayra Starr, Wizkid, and Burna Boy—artists widely regarded as pillars of Africa’s global music expansion. Despite the competition, Tyla emerged victorious, buoyed by the massive international success of her chart-topping track.

Following the announcement, Tyla quickly trended across multiple platforms as fans applauded her achievement and historic milestone as a two-time Grammy winner. Supporters praised her consistency, global appeal, and the undeniable commercial performance of Push 2 Start, which has enjoyed significant streaming success worldwide.

However, the celebration was not unanimous. A wave of criticism emerged from some Nigerian users who questioned the Recording Academy’s decision. Many argued that the award overlooked legacy, longevity, and broader contributions to African music, particularly pointing to Davido’s influence and sustained global impact.

“Davido deserved this one. Tyla’s win is impressive and her run has been incredible, but based on impact, longevity and contribution to African music on the global stage, this award should have gone to Davido,” one user wrote on X. “Recognition should balance momentum with legacy, and in this category, Davido edged it.”

Others were more direct in their criticism. “I swear Davido was clearly robbed again. What’s Push 2 Start?” another commenter posted, while a different user added, “Davido should’ve won it. The Grammys are becoming irrelevant.”

The reactions highlight a recurring tension within African music discourse—whether awards should prioritize current global momentum or long-term influence and cultural legacy. While Tyla represents a new generation of African pop stars achieving rapid international success, Nigerian artists have long been central to Africa’s dominance on the global music stage.

Despite the backlash, Tyla’s win shows the evolving landscape of African music and the growing diversity of its global representation. As the Best African Music Performance category continues to gain prominence, debates like this may become more common, reflecting both passion and pride across the continent.

For now, Tyla’s Grammy triumph remains a significant moment—celebrated by many, questioned by others, and firmly at the center of Africa’s ongoing music conversation.

You may not like the girl ooo but that song was the biggest in that category ( before you argue check the numbers).
