Thuli P Describes Avana EP as a Personal Gift: “I Wanted to Gift Myself”

Thuli P is stepping confidently into a new era of her creative journey with the release of her debut EP, Avana, a project she describes as deeply personal and symbolic. Unveiled during an intimate birthday celebration, the EP marks more than just a musical debut—it represents intention, growth, and self-recognition for the South African media personality and DJ.

Speaking to TheJournalistDJ.com, Thuli P explained that Avana was conceived as a gift to herself, serving as a creative milestone that reflects her evolution as an artist. Releasing the EP on her birthday was not about strategy or convenience, but about meaning. For her, the date symbolised renewal and the courage to embrace a new chapter.

“I wanted to gift myself something that felt different,” she shared. “Stepping into music felt like the right way to celebrate who I’m becoming.” The EP, she says, represents a conscious choice to honour her journey and trust her instincts as she expands her artistic expression.

Thuli P’s path into music has not been without challenges. Her transition from acting into DJing was initially met with public criticism and debate. Rather than discouraging her, that resistance became fuel. “The criticism pushed me to take it seriously,” she said. “It made me invest more, practice more, and really trust myself.” Over time, that determination built the confidence that allowed her to move naturally from DJing into creating and releasing original music.

The title Avana is rooted in family and heritage. Derived from Avana Amakhaya, a name that translates to harmony, it perfectly captures the essence of the project. “It felt like the right time,” Thuli P explained. “Nothing was forced — it felt like a gradual move into what I’m meant to be doing next.” The EP reflects balance, alignment, and personal growth, both creatively and emotionally.

One of the EP’s key tracks, Imali, explores money beyond materialism or status. Thuli P describes the song as a reflection on independence and empowerment. “It’s about using money as a tool — not letting it define who you are,” she said. While the song opens like a love story, it ultimately speaks to financial freedom as a gateway to purpose and possibility.

Another standout moment comes through her collaboration with T-Man Xpress. Described as prayer-like, the track encourages introspection around humanity, equality, and self-awareness. “It takes us back to ubuntu,” she noted, urging listeners to reflect on identity beyond material success.

Despite having recorded a large catalogue of music, Thuli P intentionally chose to release an EP instead of a full-length album. “I wanted people to really sit with the music,” she explained.

Closing the conversation, Thuli P expressed gratitude to her supporters and collaborators who have stood by her through every transition. With Avana, she confidently claims her space as a DJ, performer, and recording artist—embracing her growth and gifting herself a powerful new beginning.
