A promoter based in the Eastern Cape recently aired grievances about music DJ Oscar Mbo, alleging that the DJ failed to show up for a paid event. This incident has sparked controversy and drawn significant attention, especially after Oscar Mbo’s girlfriend, Lerato Phasha, faced online trolling for her appearance without makeup.
The promoter, representing C Tone Productions, detailed his frustrating experience with Oscar Mbo. Luzuko Khohli, the funder of C Tone Productions, explained that extensive preparations were made for the DJ’s appearance, including flight arrangements. However, things began to unravel when Oscar requested an earlier flight, citing another gig in Johannesburg.
Khohli recounted the series of events leading to the fallout: “I recently booked Oscar Mbo, arranging flights and everything. Later, he asked me to change his flight to an earlier time because he had another gig in Johannesburg.” This request marked the beginning of what Khohli described as a disrespectful interaction, with Oscar allegedly demanding more money despite having already been paid the agreed-upon amount.
Khohli expressed his frustration, noting the financial and logistical efforts invested in the booking. “I tried my best to negotiate, but he threatened not to show up unless I paid the R15k. Keep in mind, this artist wasn’t providing any value for me to tap into their market. They also want an additional R40k to post the show on their feed,” he explained.
The promoter’s claims highlight a broader issue of disrespect and unprofessional behavior by some artists toward promoters, particularly those in less prominent regions like the Eastern Cape. Khohli’s experience reflects a growing concern among event organizers about the reliability and professionalism of certain high-profile artists.
In response to these accusations, Oscar Mbo denied any wrongdoing. Speaking to ZiMoja, he stated, “I don’t recall the booking. People always have something to say, and I always try to stick to agreements.” His denial has done little to quell the controversy, with many fans and industry observers awaiting further developments.
This incident underscores the challenges faced by promoters in the music industry, especially when dealing with high-demand artists. The situation with Oscar Mbo serves as a cautionary tale about the importance of clear communication and the potential pitfalls of booking high-profile talent. As the story unfolds, it remains to be seen whether any resolution will be reached between Oscar Mbo and C Tone Productions.
For now, the incident stands as a stark reminder of the complexities and potential conflicts inherent in the entertainment industry, highlighting the need for professionalism and mutual respect between artists and promoters.
