The comparison between Tyla and Black Coffee’s stardom has sparked outrage among fans on Twitter, igniting a heated debate over their respective levels of fame. Tyla, the rising South African musician known for her hit song “Water,” has recently gained international recognition, leading some fans to proclaim her as the ultimate superstar from the country. However, this assertion has drawn criticism from supporters of Black Coffee, a veteran DJ and Grammy Award-winning artist who has been a prominent figure in the music industry for over a decade.

The controversy erupted after a group of YouTubers discussed Tyla’s skyrocketing success, particularly her appearance at Mall of Africa, and suggested that no other South African artist had reached her level of stardom. This assertion prompted backlash from fans of Black Coffee, who argued that his contributions to the music scene, both locally and internationally, should not be overlooked.

Twitter user Mlu__N7 was among those who defended Black Coffee, emphasizing the need to show respect for his accomplishments: “They needed to put some respect on Black Coffee. He’s been in the game for over a decade, and his influence is undeniable.”

Others criticized the YouTubers for their lack of research and understanding of the music industry, Kekemashile dragged the YouTubers: “These kids must stop speaking about what they don’t know.” Suggesting that they were too young to appreciate the legacy of artists like Black Coffee.

However, supporters of Tyla were quick to come to her defense, citing her widespread recognition and influence both in South Africa and abroad. Some argued that Tyla’s level of fame surpassed that of Black Coffee. MasingaMbongeni said: “I agree with them. There’s a difference between being a superstar and just being famous. Coffee is huge overseas, but I don’t think he’s a superstar in SA.”  Pointing to her presence in mainstream media and her popularity among younger audiences.

Despite the controversy, the debate underscored the subjective nature of stardom and the diverse opinions within the fan community. While some believe that Black Coffee’s longevity and global success make him the ultimate superstar, others argue that Tyla’s rapid rise to fame and widespread appeal make her equally deserving of the title. Ultimately, both artists have made significant contributions to South African music and continue to inspire fans around the world.
