Afro Nation: A Movement, a newly released mini documentary, aims to shed light on the growing popularity of Amapiano and Afrobeats, particularly in the Western world, where exposure to these genres has been limited. Shot during the 2023 edition of Afro Nation Portugal, the documentary provides a glimpse into the vibrant culture and rich history of these dance music styles.

Featuring interviews with festival founders SMADE and Obi Asika, as well as prominent musicians like Burna Boy and Musa Keys, Afro Nation: A Movement offers insight into the origins and evolution of Amapiano and Afrobeats. The documentary explores how these genres have captivated audiences worldwide with their infectious rhythms and unique soundscapes.

Amapiano, which originated in Johannesburg and Pretoria, South Africa, blends elements of classic house music with the local kwaito style. The documentary delves into the genre’s emergence in the early 2010s, highlighting influential artists such as MFR Souls, DJ Stokie, Kabza De Small, and DJ Maphorisa. By 2019, amapiano had become the most popular genre on TikTok South Africa, reflecting its widespread appeal.

Similarly, Afro Nation: A Movement traces the history of Afrobeats, with insights from experts like Afrobeats historian Adesope “Shopsydoo” Olajide and BBC Radio 1Xtra Host Eddie Kadi. The documentary showcases how Afrobeats has evolved over the years, gaining recognition on the global stage for its infectious beats and vibrant melodies.

In a statement from the Afro Nation Portugal organizers included at the end of the film, gratitude is expressed to everyone involved in the event, from fans and artists to the dedicated teams behind the scenes. The documentary serves as a celebration of the collective journey shared by all those who contribute to the vibrant world of Amapiano and Afrobeats.

As Afro Nation: A Movement brings these genres into the spotlight, it underscores their significance in contemporary music culture and highlights the diverse voices shaping the global dance music scene.
