Here are four times Maphorisa made headlines:
His online fight with Mlindo The Vocalist
DJ Maphorisa took to Facebook early this year to reveal how artist Mlindo The Vocalist once backstabbed him. DJ Maphorisa has grown into quite the vocal personality, often taking to his Facebook page to get certain things off his chest. In a lengthy post, the popular artist shared his story of how Mlindo The Vocalist, started working behind his back with road manager Nyiko Bilankulu.
“It’s so crazy how people will backstab u Mlindo The Vocalists came to Jozi he didn’t know anyone etc. n I had to get him a road manager, cool I asked Nyiko to help Mlindo. at that time Nyiko was supa broke but a cool hard working guy so I gave him a chance not knowing the devil. To cut the story short after two years I hear Nyiko is Mlindo’s manager. They cut off my percentage. He promoted himself. I said I will let them be even though I could take him back. I left them to do their thing,” he said.
His online fight with Davido
Nigerian international artiste and DMW label boss Davido has took to social media to drag South African record producer DJ Maphorisa after he downplayed the singer’s role in making Amapiano popular. A Twitter user identified as Ladyroza001 claimed Davido brought Amapiano from South Africa and turned it into a successful genre across the world. Reacting, Maphorisa downplayed Davido’s impact as he said he and Kabza were the first to put Wizkid and Burna Boy on an amapiano song. “Kabza & Maphorisa was the first to put Wizkid n Burnaboy on a amapiano song Sponono dat was a historical moment 3 years ago, research before tweet also it was the first time Wiz n Burna jumped on a same song together let it sink in. On seeing this, Davido dragged Maphorisa while adding that the South African DJ had never liked him.
Maphorisa and Kabza won case at Zim High Court
A Zimbabwean court has ordered that amapiano stars Kabza De Small and DJ Maphorisa should be refunded the R325,000 they paid on Monday for damages relating to their failure to perform at an event they had been booked for. The High Court of Zimbabwe sitting in Bulawayo on Tuesday ordered the country’s sheriff of the high court to immediately pay back Kabza De Small, real name Petrus Kabelo Motha, and DJ Maphorisa, real name Themba Sonnyboy Sekowe, $18,400 (R325,772,18)
His feud with MacG
MacG’s chillers have come to his defence after DJ Maphorisa basically threatened to beat him up when they meet in person. This comes after the popular podcaster called the DJ an “amapiano gatekeeper” on his YouTube podcast “Podcast and Chill with MacG” last month. “I see you don’t get it. No-one owns amapiano. Anyone can do it and win. Good example, look at Uncle Waffles. One trending Adiwele video, the rest was history. She did it alone. And look at Costa Titch. He is doing it alone and winning. Stop saying I am a gatekeeper,” Maphorisa tweeted. He even went as further as threatening him when he sees him, however he later said he was not serious.
