Major League DJz’ Banele Mbere Reportedly Served R1.19 Million SARS Tax Demand

Major League DJz star Banele Khanya Mbere has reportedly found himself facing a significant tax bill after the South African Revenue Service (SARS) issued a final letter of demand for more than R1.19 million in outstanding taxes.

According to reports, the document was served on Mbere on August 18, warning that failure to settle the alleged debt could result in further legal enforcement action. Among the measures reportedly flagged by SARS is the possibility of attaching and auctioning some of Mbere’s assets to recover the money owed.

The development adds an unexpected complication to the career of one half of Major League DJz, the twin DJ duo he forms with his brother Bandile Mbere. The pair have become some of the most recognisable names in South African music, particularly through their contribution to the growth of Amapiano both locally and internationally.

According to the Sunday Times, which reportedly reviewed the final letter of demand, SARS has warned that it could take further steps if the outstanding amount is not addressed. The reported R1.19 million debt places the matter firmly in the spotlight, particularly given the high-profile nature of Mbere’s entertainment career.

The possibility of assets being seized and auctioned represents one of the more serious enforcement measures available to the revenue authority. Such action can be used to recover outstanding tax debts when payment has not been made, although the reported letter also appears to leave room for a resolution.

Importantly, Mbere may still have an opportunity to arrange a payment plan with SARS. Reports indicate that the demand letter provides for an arrangement that could allow the DJ to settle the outstanding amount over an agreed period, potentially avoiding more severe enforcement action.

Mbere and his twin brother have built an impressive career over the years. As Major League DJz, the pair played an important role in taking Amapiano to international audiences, performing at major festivals, clubs and events around the world.

Their Balcony Mix series became particularly influential, transforming the duo into a global brand and helping introduce South African music to millions of listeners online. What began as outdoor DJ sessions grew into major cultural moments, particularly during the COVID-19 lockdown period when live entertainment was severely restricted.

The reported tax dispute therefore comes at a significant moment for the Major League DJz brand. While their music career continues to attract attention internationally, the alleged SARS debt presents a separate financial challenge that will need to be addressed.

For now, reports suggest that Mbere has a limited period to resolve the matter before SARS potentially considers stronger enforcement measures. Neither Mbere nor Major League DJz has publicly commented on the reported tax demand at the time of writing.

The situation remains developing, with attention now likely to turn to whether the reported outstanding amount is settled or whether SARS proceeds with further action.
