South Africa’s diverse music landscape takes centre stage once again as Mashup Masters returns with Episode 4 of its second season, bringing together Lia Butler and XDuppy for an exciting cross-genre collaboration. The latest episode explores what happens when the infectious energy of Amapiano meets the cultural depth and contemporary character of Neo-Zulu.
The collaboration gives both artists an opportunity to step outside their familiar creative environments and experiment with sounds they may not normally explore. For Lia Butler, the experience was an opportunity to challenge herself creatively and discover what she could achieve outside her usual sound.
“I loved being able to step outside my comfort zone and explore a sound I wouldn’t normally make. It was a really exciting experience. Working with XDuppy showed me how naturally different sounds can come together when you’re open to experimenting,” she says.
Her willingness to experiment becomes an important part of the episode, particularly as Neo-Zulu carries its own cultural and musical identity. Working alongside XDuppy allows Lia to approach the sound from a different perspective while maintaining the elements that make her artistry distinctive.
XDuppy also embraced the challenge, viewing the collaboration as an opportunity to demonstrate the versatility of South African music. For the Amapiano star, the meeting of the two genres revealed that their differences could actually create an exciting musical connection.
“Neo-Zulu and Amapiano come from different places, but there’s a natural connection between them. Working with Lia pushed me creatively, and I think that energy comes through in the music,” he says.
