South African global superstar Tyla is celebrating yet another remarkable career milestone after officially joining the cast of Toy Story 5, one of Disney and Pixar’s most beloved animated franchises. The Grammy-winning singer has lent her voice to a brand-new character called Inflatable Flamingo for the Sub-Saharan African release of the highly anticipated film, marking a major achievement in her rapidly growing international career.
As Toy Story 5 arrives in cinemas, fans across South Africa and beyond are excited to hear Tyla bring a new character to life alongside iconic figures such as Woody and Buzz Lightyear. The opportunity is particularly special because it represents the fulfilment of a dream that many fans now believe she manifested years ago.
Back on 18 October 2023, Tyla posted a simple yet memorable message on social media that read: “Disney, hit me up when you free.”
At the time, the tweet appeared to be a playful comment from the singer. Fast forward three years later, and Disney did exactly that. The entertainment giant reached out to offer Tyla a role in one of the most successful animated franchises in cinema history.
The singer recently opened up about the experience during an interview on Anele and the Club on 947 FM. During the conversation, radio personality Anele reminded her of the now-viral tweet. Tyla admitted that she had completely forgotten about posting it and was surprised when it was brought up again.
Speaking about how she landed the role, Tyla explained that the exciting news came directly from her team.
“I got the news from my team and they were like, ‘Disney reached out and they want you to voice the Flamingo for the African version of Toy Story,’ and I said yes straight away,” she revealed.
For Tyla, joining the Toy Story universe was an emotional and surreal moment. Having grown up watching the films, she could hardly believe that she would one day become part of the franchise she loved as a child.
“When I was asked to join the production of Toy Story 5, I was so excited. This is like the first time I was on the managers every day. What’s happening on Toy Story? I just couldn’t believe that the offer was even presented to me. It’s literally Toy Story, I’m with Woody and Buzz Lightyear,” she said.
According to reports, the opportunity means far more than another impressive addition to her résumé. It is also the realisation of a childhood dream and a proud moment for African representation in global entertainment.
Reflecting on the significance of the role, Tyla shared, “Toy Story has been such a special part of my childhood, so being part of this film is a full-circle moment for me. I’m incredibly excited for audiences to experience it, and it means so much to know that African viewers will hear an African voice bringing one of these beloved characters to life.”
With Toy Story 5 now entertaining audiences worldwide, Tyla’s journey from casually tweeting Disney to becoming part of one of the most iconic film franchises serves as a powerful reminder that dreams can become reality when talent, hard work, and perfect timing come together.
