Zee Nxumalo Named Spotify EQUAL Africa Ambassador for May

Amapiano sensation Zee Nxumalo continues to break barriers in the music industry after being officially named Spotify’s EQUAL Africa ambassador for May. The recognition forms part of Spotify’s Spotify EQUAL Africa programme, which aims to spotlight and empower female artists across the continent.

The announcement marks another major milestone in Zee Nxumalo’s rapidly growing career. Over the past two years, the singer has established herself as one of the fastest-rising stars in South African music, particularly within the Amapiano scene. According to Spotify Wrapped 2025 data, Zee Nxumalo was recognised as the platform’s most-streamed South African female artist of the year, further proving her growing influence and popularity.

Her breakout moment came in 2024 with the massive success of Funk 55, which went on to achieve five-times platinum certification. Since then, she has continued building momentum with hit songs such as Ngisakuthanda, while also expanding her brand through major commercial partnerships and media appearances.

Among her standout collaborations was a partnership with Nickelodeon Africa, where she reworked the iconic SpongeBob SquarePants theme song. Her growing success has also seen her appear on magazine covers and feature in billboard campaigns in London, highlighting her increasing international visibility.

Speaking about her musical journey, Zee Nxumalo explained that her connection to music developed naturally over time rather than through one defining moment.

“There wasn’t one big moment; it kind of happened over time. The more I made music, the more it just felt right,” she shared. “As people started connecting with it, it built my confidence. At first, it was about that validation, but now it’s deeper than that. It’s really about understanding myself and expressing who I am through music.”

The singer also revealed that artists such as Wizkid, Cassper Nyovest, and Mlindo The Vocalist played an important role in shaping her musical tastes while growing up.

Describing her sound, Zee Nxumalo said her music combines youthful energy with emotional storytelling. “I’d say it’s vibrant, youthful, and uplifting, but also very emotional,” she explained. “Most of my music is in isiZulu, but what I love is that even people who don’t understand the language still feel it.”

Reflecting on being chosen for Spotify’s EQUAL Africa programme, the singer described the recognition as an important step forward for women in music. “Being part of EQUAL is about showing that music isn’t limited by gender,” she said. “It’s about expression, and the more we show up as ourselves, the more we create space for others to do the same.”
