Controversial music commentator Nota Baloyi has once again stirred conversation in the South African music scene—this time with high praise for rising star Scotts Maphuma. During a recent episode of the Music Pulse podcast, Nota boldly described Scotts Maphuma as a “genius,” crediting him for his strategic approach to music and his influence on the evolution of Amapiano.

Speaking as one of the hosts on the platform, Nota highlighted what he believes sets Scotts Maphuma apart from many of his peers. Rather than simply releasing music, the artist is said to actively study audience behavior and engage with listeners in real time. Nota explained that Maphuma carefully observes social media reactions, analyzes feedback, and uses that information to shape his subsequent releases.

“So you look at Scotts Maphuma—an intelligent guy, super intelligent. It takes intelligence to do what he’s doing, it takes intelligence to do what he’s doing. And he gathers intelligence on society.” Nota said during the discussion. He went on to describe the artist as a “social engineer.” “He gets reactions, he finds out what’s happening on social media, he’ll drop a track, he’ll read the comments, cool, he’ll respond to the comments on his latest song based on what people are saying.”

Like, dude, come on, man. That guy’s a social engineer. He reflects what is happening in society. He’s done so for three summers. He’s saved Amapiano for three summers.”  emphasizing how Maphuma mirrors the mood and conversations happening within society through his music.

According to Nota, this method has proven incredibly effective. By tapping into current trends and public sentiment, Scotts Maphuma has managed to remain relevant and impactful across multiple seasons. Nota even credited him with helping to sustain the popularity of Amapiano, claiming that the artist has “saved Amapiano for three summers” through his consistent delivery of hit records.

The remarks quickly gained traction online after Scotts Maphuma himself shared a clip of the podcast discussion on his Instagram story. Fans flooded social media with reactions, with many agreeing with Nota’s assessment and praising Maphuma’s unique ability to connect with audiences.

Scotts Maphuma’s rise in the Amapiano scene has been marked by a string of successful releases and collaborations, positioning him as one of the genre’s most exciting talents. His approach—blending catchy sounds with a deep awareness of cultural trends—has resonated strongly with fans both locally and beyond.

While Nota is no stranger to controversy, his comments this time have sparked a largely positive conversation, shining a spotlight on the intelligence and strategy behind modern hitmaking. As Amapiano continues to dominate the global stage, voices like Scotts Maphuma are proving that success in today’s music industry requires more than just talent—it demands innovation, adaptability, and a sharp understanding of the audience.
