South African Amapiano pioneer DJ Stokie has sparked conversation across social media after sharing his thoughts on the current direction of Amapiano music. The respected producer recently revealed that he would rather listen to Deep House than some of the newer sounds dominating the Amapiano scene today.

DJ Stokie, who is widely recognized as one of the early contributors to the growth of Amapiano, made the comments while reacting to an online discussion about the genre’s evolving sound. The producer did not hold back his feelings, expressing concern about where he believes the genre is heading.

“My Brother To Tell You The Truth kuya bheda serious Bali bulele ipiano we no longer listen to the good music but sizo thini when you talk bazothi Uno Mona I rather listen to Deep House,” he wrote.

His comments quickly gained traction online, with many fans and music lovers debating whether Amapiano has changed too much from its original sound. Some supporters agreed with DJ Stokie, arguing that the genre has drifted away from its soulful roots in favor of louder and more commercial sounds. Others defended the new wave of Amapiano, saying evolution and experimentation are necessary for the genre to continue growing globally.

DJ Stokie has long been celebrated for helping shape the Amapiano movement through timeless hits such as Awukhuzekiand many other fan-favorite records. His signature sound, often rooted in soulful melodies and groove-driven production, played an important role in defining the early identity of Amapiano.

The producer’s latest comments appear connected to the rise of newer, more aggressive and experimental styles currently emerging within the genre. Recently, songs such as Gone Kanje by Scotts Maphuma have sparked debate among listeners, with some embracing the fresh sound while others criticize it for moving too far away from traditional Amapiano elements.

Social media users have since shared mixed reactions to DJ Stokie’s statement. Some fans praised him for speaking honestly about the state of the genre, while others argued that every generation of music naturally evolves and introduces new styles.

The discussion also reflects a larger conversation happening within South African music about balancing innovation with preserving the original identity of genres that become commercially successful.

Despite the debates, Amapiano continues dominating streaming platforms, clubs, festivals, and international stages around the world. Younger artists continue experimenting with new sounds, while veteran producers like DJ Stokie remain passionate about maintaining the soulful essence that helped build the genre from the ground up.

Many fans believe conversations like these are important because they highlight how deeply artists care about the future of South African music. Whether listeners prefer old-school Amapiano or the newer wave of sounds – the genre continues evolving and inspiring strong opinions from both artists and fans alike.

For now, DJ Stokie’s comments have reignited the debate around where Amapiano is headed next and what its future sound will ultimately become.
