Now featured on Forbes Africa, the self-proclaimed “Godmother of Amapiano” is opening up about the grind, lessons, and determination that shaped her remarkable rise.
Speaking candidly about her beginnings, DBN Gogo revealed that her entry into DJing wasn’t immediate. Before stepping behind the decks, she worked as a promoter for venues, bringing crowds in and organizing drink specials. It was during this time that she built relationships with DJs and began observing the craft up close.
“I used to promote for venues. I would get people to come obviously and give them drink specials. And then I became friends with all the DJs. And I was like, you know what? I really feel like this is something I can do,” she shared. That curiosity soon turned into commitment as she began asking her DJ friends to teach her.
Her learning process wasn’t glamorous. Lessons were scattered and informal at first, happening randomly whenever she could secure time with someone willing to guide her. It wasn’t until 2017 that she decided to pursue DJing seriously. She received a few focused lessons from DJ Venom, which helped lay a stronger foundation.
Her first official gig took place at Tshwanefontein in Pretoria. “I mean I played at 12, there was no one there,” she recalled. Despite the small crowd, that moment proved to be a crucial stepping stone. “It really was the building blocks. I basically learned how to DJ while doing it as a job.”
At the time, she earned just R200 per set — a modest sum compared to the major bookings and international stages she commands today. But those humble beginnings taught her resilience, adaptability, and confidence behind the decks.
“It has been quite a journey,” she reflected.
