DJ Maphorisa Calls Out Nota Baloyi Over Unpaid Royalties for ‘Ngud’

DJ Maphorisa has once again publicly called out outspoken music executive Nota Baloyi, turning what was meant to be a celebratory milestone into another heated industry clash. The acclaimed producer effectively rained on Nota’s parade by using the moment to reopen their long-running dispute over unpaid royalties linked to the hit song Ngud.

The drama unfolded when Nota Baloyi took to X (formerly Twitter) to commemorate the 10-year anniversary of Ngud, Kwesta’s chart-topping single featuring Cassper Nyovest. Proud of the milestone, Nota shared a simple post that read: “Released Ngud 10 years ago today,” sparking nostalgia among fans of the iconic track.

However, the celebratory mood was short-lived. DJ Maphorisa, who was involved in the creation of the song, responded directly to Nota’s post and questioned why he had yet to receive compensation for his contribution. His reply carried a clear tone of frustration, reflecting what he suggests has been a decade-long wait.

“Are you gonna pay me my royalties, yoh🙄 been waiting 10 years,” Maphorisa wrote, instantly reigniting debate across social media.

The comment quickly went viral, with many users weighing in on the dispute. While some supported Maphorisa for publicly demanding accountability, others criticised both parties for airing industry grievances online rather than resolving them privately.

Nota Baloyi did not back down. In the comment section, he fired back with a lengthy response that blended explanation with sharp shade. According to Nota, Maphorisa’s belief that he is owed royalties stems from misunderstandings around music sampling and publishing rights, which he claims complicated ownership of the song.

“You’re too young to forget you sampled Camino de Sol, and they claimed 100% of the publishing Alzheimer’s,” Nota wrote. He further referenced international hit One Dance, arguing that sampling disputes can leave artists without publishing income. “Almost 10 years since One Dance, and you’re not even owed one cent on that,” he added, before ending with a cryptic statement about ignoring critics and letting “the money pile up.”

The public exchange quickly gained traction, becoming a talking point beyond just fans of the artists involved. Some social media users found humour in the ongoing back-and-forth between the two industry figures, treating it as yet another chapter in their long-standing feud. Others, however, expressed concern over the persistent public nature of the dispute, questioning why unresolved royalty matters continue to surface online.

As the debate continues, the clash once again highlights the complexities of music ownership, sampling, and royalties, while shedding light on deeper issues of transparency and compensation within the music industry.
