Amapiano star Babalwa M has finally spoken out following widespread criticism over her decision not to perform at the Itsoseng Delicious event on the Day of Goodwill, setting the record straight on what she describes as a deeply unprofessional and distressing experience.
Taking to her social media platforms, the award-winning vocalist addressed speculation surrounding her withdrawal, firmly dismissing claims that she pulled out due to unreasonable performance riders or alcohol-related demands. According to Babalwa M, the real issue lay with the conduct of the event promoters on the day.
“My decision not to proceed with the performance was not based on performance riders or alcohol demands, as suggested,” she explained. “I have performed at numerous venues with incorrect riders or no riders at all, and I have always chosen professionalism over inconvenience when the engagement is handled respectfully.”
The situation, however, reportedly took a serious turn when tensions escalated on site. Babalwa M alleged that she was subjected to verbal abuse by one of the promoters, including being sworn at and called “crazy.” She said this behaviour created an unsafe and hostile environment, making it impossible for her to continue with the performance.
“Under those circumstances it became impossible to continue in a safe, respectful and professional environment,” she said, stressing that artists should not be expected to endure mistreatment for the sake of a show.
Addressing misinformation circulating online, Babalwa M clarified that she had already agreed to perform at a discounted fee. She also debunked claims regarding alcohol demands, revealing that the extra bottle mentioned in the promoters’ statement was provided by a friend of her DJ, not by the event organisers. In addition, she highlighted a lack of basic hospitality, noting that neither she nor her team were offered water.
“As an artist and a professional, I believe that mutual respect is non-negotiable,” she said. “Just as one would not continue a transaction in a store where they are treated poorly, I could not proceed with a performance after being disrespected.”
The singer added that leaving the venue was necessary to protect her well-being and that of her team. Demonstrating good faith, she revealed that she issued a full refund to the organisers before departing, emphasising that her decision was not rooted in entitlement.
Babalwa M described the incident as an isolated case and concluded by offering a heartfelt apology to fans who attended the event expecting to see her perform. She noted that the situation highlights the importance of respect, professionalism, and honouring agreements within South Africa’s entertainment industry.
