Apple Music has officially unveiled South African DJ and globally acclaimed producer Vigro Deep as the newest Isgubhu featured artist, celebrating his influential contribution to Amapiano’s worldwide explosion. The announcement arrives alongside the release of his exclusive Isgubhu DJ Mix, a project that pays homage to the artists and sounds that have shaped his journey while honouring the legacy of his renowned Baby Boy album series.
Honouring His Roots and Artistic Evolution
Vigro Deep, born Kamogelo Phetla in Atteridgeville, Pretoria, has established himself as one of the most groundbreaking voices in African electronic music. Known for his thunderous log drums, cinematic soundscapes, and fearless approach to production, he has repeatedly pushed the boundaries of Amapiano’s sonic identity. His Baby Boy series, which began when he was just 17 years old, has become a defining body of work, culminating in the recent Baby Boy V.
Speaking on the inspiration behind the mix, Vigro Deep told Apple Music that the project is both a tribute and a closing chapter.
“My mix was a tribute to the artists who have played a role in my journey as well as new artists who I find inspiring for pushing their own sounds,” he said. “It is also a celebration for the end of the Baby Boy chapter… this mix captures all of that for me.”
Growing up surrounded by music, influenced by his father DJ Spring of The Godfathers of Deep House SA, Vigro Deep initially aspired to become a rapper before discovering his passion for producing. Since then, he has built an impressive catalogue, which includes standout hits like “Black Power,” “Untold Stories,” “Blue Monday,” and “A-Z Yash Imoto.” His production contributions to major projects such as the Scorpion Kings album further cement his place as a musical powerhouse.
Reflecting on the emotional feel of his Isgubhu mix, he highlighted its personal resonance:
“The mood centres on the feeling of being home, where I am my happiest.”
Global Reach and A Vision for African Electronic Music
Vigro Deep’s influence extends far beyond South Africa. He has toured stages across the UK, United States, Botswana, and Mozambique, where his electrifying performances have introduced global audiences to Amapiano’s vibrant pulse. His sound—defined by heavy rhythms, bold synth patterns, and immersive textures—continues to elevate Amapiano on the world stage.
Commenting on the evolution of African electronic music, he emphasised authenticity and sonic innovation.
“African electronic music continues to evolve because artists push boundaries and put time into finding their own unique sound… it’s always been about blending genres which has allowed me to keep my releases fresh.”
