Pabi Cooper continues to prove why she is one of South Africa’s most innovative and influential artists. Known for producing chart-topping hits and delivering iconic collaborations, the award-winning star recently took a refreshing and nostalgic approach to promoting her latest single, “Pelo Tse Thata.” Instead of relying solely on digital platforms, Pabi went straight to the people, taking to the streets of Johannesburg in a bold, hands-on marketing campaign that had the city buzzing.

The singer shared the experience with her followers on Instagram, writing: “Kwa Mai – Mai to Soshanguve. 100 USBs. 1 Single. The streets have it now. Pelo Tse Thata OUT NOW.” True to her word, Pabi distributed 100 USBs loaded with her new single to taxi drivers and street vendors, recognising the vital role they play in spreading music across communities. Taxis, after all, remain one of the most powerful platforms for breaking new songs in South Africa, with commuters listening daily during their journeys.

Pabi kicked off her campaign at the iconic Kwa Mai-Mai Traditional Market in Johannesburg, a cultural hub rich in history and daily foot traffic. From there, she took the movement all the way to Soshanguve, Pretoria, ensuring the song reached different corners of Gauteng. Along the way, she stopped to take pictures with fans, shared warm interactions, and handed out Essence lip glosses, adding a personal and stylish touch to the experience.

The street activation quickly turned into a mini celebration. Pabi even performed snippets of the song for the crowd alongside her backup dancers, creating an electrifying atmosphere and allowing fans to experience “Pelo Tse Thata” live and up close. The genuine excitement from the people on the ground reflected just how effective the strategy was.

This old-school approach to music promotion struck a chord with many in the industry. In the past, artists built their buzz by printing flyers, burning CDs, sharing USBs, and talking directly to people about their work. By reviving this method, Pabi Cooper not only paid homage to that era but also reminded the industry that organic, street-level promotion still holds power in the digital age.

Many fellow artists applauded Pabi’s move, praising her creativity and connection with the streets. With “Pelo Tse Thata” now out and already gaining traction, this clever campaign has once again positioned Pabi Cooper as a trendsetter who understands both the culture and the people who keep South African music alive.
