Major League DJz are under heavy fire on X after being accused of failing to honour their public promise to give acclaimed producer Mdu aka TRP a $50,000 (±R845,000) reward for his groundbreaking contribution to the Amapiano movement.
The controversy began shortly after DJ Maphorisa publicly celebrated Mdu aka TRP for his pivotal role in the genre. Maphorisa credited Mdu with discovering and shaping the iconic log drum, the sound that not only defines Amapiano but also helped propel the genre’s global rise. He praised Mdu for “changing lives” and leaving a permanent mark on the music landscape.
Following these praises, Major League DJz responded with a now-deleted tweet, vowing to send Mdu $50,000 as a gesture of appreciation for his influence. At the time, the announcement generated excitement across social media, with fans applauding the gesture and celebrating Mdu’s long-overdue recognition.
But the hype was short-lived.
Users on X quickly noticed that the tweet had disappeared, sparking speculation that the duo were backtracking on their promise. What started as confusion soon escalated into a wave of backlash, with users questioning the DJs’ integrity and accusing them of clout-chasing.
The situation intensified when an account claiming to represent PianoHub, the label Mdu is signed to, released a bold statement confirming the producer had not received any portion of the $50,000.
“As the management of PianoHub, the label to which Mdu a.k.a. TRP is signed, we hereby confirm that our artist has not received the promised funds,”
the statement read.
The confirmation added fuel to the fire, leading many users to drag Major League DJz for “making empty promises,” “using Mdu for engagement,” and “disrespecting pioneers of the sound they benefit from.”
Some users expressed disappointment, saying that someone who contributed so much to Amapiano deserves tangible recognition, not publicity stunts. Others demanded the duo address the allegations directly.
While Major League DJz have not yet issued a formal response, the situation continues to trend, with audiences calling for accountability and transparency from influential figures in the industry.
For now, the alleged broken promise remains a hot topic—and a reminder of how quickly admiration can turn into outrage on social media.
