Babalwa M’s Performance Has Fans Divided Over Stage Presence

South African Amapiano sensation Babalwa M recently took the stage at Max’s Lifestyle in Umlazi, Durban, but her performance left fans with mixed feelings. While she remains one of the most distinctive voices in the genre, many on social media expressed disappointment, saying her stage presence failed to match the energy of her hit songs.

The performance, captured in a viral video shared by Audio Lab, showed Babalwa M performing “Sisukakude,” her acclaimed collaboration with Kelvin Momo. Despite the track being a fan favorite, the crowd’s subdued reaction and Babalwa’s low-energy delivery quickly became a topic of discussion online. Viewers pointed out that although her vocals were on point, she appeared to lack the charisma and engagement that many expected from such a major performance.

Babalwa M wore denim shorts and a simple black top for the show — a look that divided fans as well. Some praised her for keeping things authentic and comfortable, while others felt her outfit didn’t match the grandeur of the venue or the moment. The singer has always been known for her understated approach to fashion, often opting for streetwear or relaxed styles on stage.

This isn’t the first time Babalwa M’s stage presence and fashion choices have sparked debate. Notably, Nota Baloyi, a well-known music commentator, once advised her to embrace a more striking stage image to elevate her brand. She seemed to take that advice during Kelvin Momo’s Red Bull Symphonic performance, where she stunned in a pink dress and heels — a look that received widespread praise.

However, her recent appearance at Max’s Lifestyle marked a return to her familiar, casual aesthetic. While some fans defended her right to express herself comfortably, others argued that her laid-back presentation doesn’t reflect the level of artistry she brings to her music.

Despite the criticism, there’s no denying Babalwa M’s influence within the Amapiano scene. Her collaborations with Kelvin Momo and other top producers have solidified her as one of the genre’s leading female voices. Still, as her career continues to grow, fans are eager to see her evolve not just musically, but also in how she commands the stage.

Whether her latest performance was a misstep or a reflection of her authentic style, one thing is certain — Babalwa M continues to spark conversation wherever she goes.
