The First Amapiano Fest Details Announced. Amapiano is the most recent sensation to come out of the country. First appearing in the mid-2010s, the genre evolved out of South African house music, filling the void that was left by Kwaito in the noughties, in turn becoming a soundtrack for young people in South Africa. Taking cues from deep, soulful house, jazz and lounge, and at times calling to mind the sound of UK Funky, it’s often characterised by atmospheric pads, synths and spacious bass lines.

It is the first of its kind in South Africa to promote and showcase music, dance, and lifestyle of Amapiano. Love it or hate it but Amapiano is one sound that that has taken over dance floors countrywide. And for good reason – it combines many genres house music, gqom, kwaito, Afro beats… It is after all the local beat that carried many of us through the lockdown period.

The impact of the beat has had international artists and local artists from other genres make hit song or two to this beat straight from kasi. Amapiano Fest that is to be held at The Ostrich here in Cape Town with a heavy line-up of popular Amapiano artists and DJs . However, the names will be announced end of March.

Details:

  • Date: 30 April 2023
  • Venue: The Ostrich

These sounds have travelled across borders too. In recent years the Amapiano craze has taken over TikTok and Spotify, while here in the UK underground producers are also taking inspiration from these grooves in their own work.
