Acclaimed South African vocalist and storyteller Nobuhle Khuzwayo has officially released her highly anticipated new album, IMVULA: REBIRTH, a deeply spiritual and emotionally expansive project that takes the story of her original Imvula album into an entirely new chapter.

Rather than simply serving as a deluxe edition or an extension of the original project, IMVULA: REBIRTH represents transformation. The album explores themes of identity, vulnerability, ancestral memory, sacrifice, healing and survival, offering listeners a deeply personal look into Nobuhle’s evolution as both an artist and a woman.

The project brings together an impressive lineup of African music heavyweights, including Kabza De Small, Young Stunna, Nkosazana Daughter, Professor, Essa Kay, Mr Lu, Goon Flavour, Murumba Pitch and Josiah De Disciple. Each collaborator contributes their own distinctive sound while remaining connected to the soul, spirituality and purpose that define the project.

At the spiritual centre of the album is “Isigubhu Sika Gogo,” which translates to “My Grandmother’s Drum.” Nobuhle describes the song as one of the most vulnerable moments of her career, using it to explore her identity, memories, bloodline and personal sacrifices.

“It’s about identity, memory, my bloodline, and my own self-sacrifice to the world,” Nobuhle says. “It is when I was most vulnerable.”

The song becomes an emotional heartbeat for IMVULA: REBIRTH, reflecting themes of ancestry, womanhood, pain and spiritual inheritance. Throughout the album, Nobuhle allows audiences to experience parts of her story in ways that feel intimate and unfiltered, transforming personal experiences into music with a timeless quality.

On “Igama,” featuring Mr Lu, the singer explores faith, endurance and the significance of simply continuing to exist with purpose. The song becomes an affirmation of survival and perseverance.

“It shows how difficult it has been to be here and continue staying not just alive, but alive with purpose. With ‘Igama’, the name, I am alive,” she explains.

Elsewhere, “Ithonga” with Goon Flavour serves as a praise song dedicated to Nobuhle’s people and the strength they have given her. Meanwhile, “Ngibulawa Nguwe,” featuring Murumba Pitch, ventures into deeply personal territory by exploring love and emotional vulnerability.

“It is the first time in my career I have taken a personal relationship complication and turned it into a song,” Nobuhle reveals.

Ultimately, IMVULA: REBIRTH is a spiritual as well as musical transformation. Through powerful collaborations, live instrumentation, ancestral textures and emotionally charged songwriting, Nobuhle bridges traditional spirituality with modern African soundscapes.

The album captures an artist embracing her past, confronting vulnerability and emerging stronger. With IMVULA: REBIRTH, Nobuhle does not simply revisit her story—she reimagines it, offering listeners a powerful soundtrack to healing, survival and rebirth.
