Pretoria-based Amapiano duo Mellow & Sleazy are making waves in the South African music scene with the release of their latest EP, “Boroko Keng.” Loosely translated as “What’s Sleep?” the six-track compilation showcases the duo’s evolution within the Bacardi-tinged Amapiano genre, firmly establishing them among the exciting new voices and producers emerging in this vibrant musical landscape.

“Boroko Keng” is a sonic journey that captivates the essence of Amapiano, a genre characterized by its infectious beats, upbeat tempo, and fusion of various musical elements. Mellow & Sleazy’s contribution to the genre is marked by synth-laden, melodic compositions that offer a high-octane musical experience, perfectly aligning with the preferences of Pretoria’s dynamic twenty-something demographic.

The EP kicks off with a bang, featuring a pair of bangers that bear the unmistakable stamp of fellow Pretorian artist Focalistic’s work ethic and bravado. “Chom’yam,” the opening track, weaves in the popular “people are burning” catchphrase into its bass-heavy framework, creating a dynamic and energetic atmosphere. The collaboration with Leemckrazy, Dinho, and TheBuu adds layers of catchy flows, intertwined with fluits (stylized whistles) and syncopated shakers, making it an instant crowd-pleaser.

The EP’s momentum continues with “Netflix,” a track that introduces an acidic and edgy tone, showcasing Mellow & Sleazy’s ability to experiment with diverse sounds within the Amapiano spectrum. The DJ Hunrose-aided “Anna Benette (Remix)” follows, infusing electronic bounce into a famous township nursery rhyme, giving it a fresh and modern twist.

As the EP nears its conclusion, Mellow & Sleazy invite listeners into an atmospheric and introspective experience with the hit track “Imnandi lento.” Tman Xpress joins forces to layer blissful tones over crisp snares, adding a spiritual touch to the offering. This track serves as a reflective and serene conclusion to the energetic journey presented throughout “Boroko Keng.”

Mellow & Sleazy’s “Boroko Keng” EP positions them as rising stars in the Amapiano genre, contributing to its evolution and expanding its boundaries. The duo’s ability to blend traditional Amapiano elements with modern influences, coupled with their strategic collaborations, sets them apart as innovators within the South African music scene. As the EP continues to gain traction, Mellow & Sleazy’s Boroko Keng promises to be a noteworthy addition to the ever-growing catalog of Amapiano hits.
