Black Twitter Weighs In On Who Popularized Amapiano In Nigeria. An unexpected debate started on Twitter when South African artist DJ Maphorisa made a controversial statement that they put on Nigerian artists on Amapiano. A statement Davido denied. The music genre of Amapiano has taken over the globe, with many local artists performing at sold-out concerts worldwide. It is understood the mixed genre of deep house, jazz and lounge music originated in South Africa, a fact that is not disputed.

Yesterday’s reactions reopened an ongoing conversation about ownership of Amapiano, and Nigerian music’s adaptation of it. South African fans rightfully feel credit should be given to their artists for the genre they’ve popularized. The question that lingers is whether there is, or should be a line between creators and adopters. Even the likes of Davido, DJ Maphorisa, KDDO and May D weighed in.

The broader misconception of lumping together various African places and practices still plays a big role in global perceptions. For example, African music in recent years has been conveyed under the encompassing term Afrobeats, even though a multitude of genres exist across the continent, sometimes coming together to create something a new.See some of the reactions below.

The funny thing people are failing to realize is Bad To Me isn’t a full Amapiano sound, there’s an intentional R&B vibe at the same time something only a genius can pull off with the risk of not losing the it audience when listening. When you’re all calm you’ll get it.

Bad To Me is more of Afrobeats than Amapiano, it’s an Afrobeats song with some Amapiano elements.

Chicken vs goat meat, Apple vs Android, afrobeats vs amapiano – those are choices one can be "undecided" over.

Not this.

Because shey òdè ni yín abi which one is "undecided voter" here?

I need South African piano artists and producers to gatekeep Amapiano as much as possible, Nigerians are saying things we don't understand now.

I actually didn't see any bad in what Maphorisa tweeted. He only corrected someone that Burna Boy and Wizkid were the first Nigerians to jump on Amapiano, and it was his song. Also saying he was the first to feature both on a song. How some people read him tweet? 🤔

If you love good music, go listen to “Bad To Me” by Wizkid. No wonder they nicknamed him “Popsy” coz he killed that song with a blend of Amapiano. African Artists should just leave this music thing for Wizkid, he’s a 🐐.

Amapiano originates from the Igbo phrase, 'Ama Piano.'

Ama means 'know,' in the Igbo language.

Amapiano translates into English as "Knowledge of Piano."

There you go. I am the first music journalist to document the original definition of Amapiano. Guiness come and see o!
