Major League DJZ Spark Outrage After Safety Warning to Women Amid Kempton Park Murders

Major League DJZ have found themselves at the centre of a heated social media debate after sharing a safety warning urging women in Johannesburg to avoid going out alone amid a string of murders in Gauteng.

The Amapiano duo shared the message on their joint X account, encouraging women to remain vigilant and move in groups following reports of a dangerous individual allegedly targeting women in the Johannesburg area.

“Ladies in Johannesburg, please be extra careful and vigilant. There are reports of a dangerous individual targeting ladies in the area. Avoid walking or running alone, please move in groups, especially early in the morning or at night. Look out for one another and stay safe,” the DJs wrote.

The warning came after five women were reportedly murdered in the Kempton Park and Olifantsfontein areas since July 2026, with the killings raising fears that a serial killer could be operating in the area.

The latest case involves 38-year-old Elizabeth “Tsontso” Moselakgomo, who reportedly left her home in Rhodesfield for a run on Wednesday, 9 September, but never returned. A badly beaten woman wearing running attire was subsequently discovered in the area on 12 September. Due to the severity of the victim’s facial injuries, her family was only able to formally confirm her identity on 14 September.

The case has added to growing concern among residents, while the South African Police Service, under Acting National Commissioner Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane, has established a dedicated multidisciplinary task team to investigate whether the killings could be connected.

Although Major League DJZ’s post appeared intended as a message of concern and solidarity, many women in the comments criticised the direction of the warning. Some argued that telling women to change their movements places the responsibility for preventing violence on potential victims instead of addressing the perpetrators.

“No, instead of cautioning us, it would also be very HELPFUL to talk to the men who are killing and raping us. Imagine not being able to walk freely to the shops or JOG!” one woman responded.

Another questioned why women were being told to restrict their movements, asking why the message was not directed at men committing the violence.

“Why are you restricting women’s movements? Why are you not telling those men to stop what they are doing?” she wrote.

Another commenter accused the DJs of “victim blaming women for atrocities caused by men” and urged them to address the people responsible for the violence.

The backlash highlights the difficult conversation surrounding women’s safety in South Africa, where well-intentioned safety advice can quickly become controversial when it is perceived as placing restrictions on potential victims rather than confronting the perpetrators.
