Gaba Cannal returns with uYena, Pt. 1, the opening chapter of a deeply personal three-part project that explores identity, faith, love and legacy. More than simply another Amapiano release, the five-track EP offers an intimate look into the emotions, experiences and reflections that continue to shape the acclaimed producer and DJ.

The title uYena carries both personal and cultural significance. Drawn from Gaba Cannal’s family name and the South African declaration meaning “The One,” the project immediately establishes a sense of purpose. Across its five tracks, Gaba Cannal moves through spirituality, romance and self-reflection, combining ethereal textures with heartfelt songwriting and the musical depth that has become synonymous with his sound.

At the heart of the project is “Hold On To You,” an intimate love song built around the quiet commitment of choosing one person repeatedly. The track relies on emotive vocals and restrained production, allowing its message to take centre stage. Rather than overwhelming listeners with elaborate arrangements, Gaba Cannal creates space for vulnerability, delivering one of his most emotionally direct moments.

That vulnerability is one of the defining characteristics of uYena, Pt. 1. The project does not approach Amapiano solely as music designed for movement and nightlife. Instead, it demonstrates the genre’s ability to communicate tenderness, spirituality, romance and deeply personal experiences while maintaining its sophisticated musical identity.

For Gaba Cannal, this emotional approach is a natural extension of the sound he has spent years developing. Born Khaka Yena and raised in the east of Johannesburg, the producer has played an important role in the development of Amapiano, particularly through his soulful production style and independent approach.

His musical foundation stretches beyond Amapiano, with house music and gospel influences helping shape his distinctive sound. Through Gaba Cannal Music, he also established one of the early official stables within the Amapiano industry, working with and supporting producers such as De Mthuda, Kwiish SA, Da Muziqal Chef and El’kaydee, alongside fellow pioneer and frequent collaborator Master Jay.

With uYena, Pt. 1, Gaba Cannal continues to expand the soulful and spiritual lane he helped establish. The EP feels intentional rather than rushed, allowing each song to contribute to a larger story about healing, connection and personal identity.

As the first chapter of a three-part body of work, uYena, Pt. 1 leaves listeners with a sense that there is much more to come. Gaba Cannal is not simply releasing music; he is documenting a personal journey and building another meaningful chapter in his enduring Amapiano legacy.
