Born from the collective spirit of South African music, Red Bull Back2Beyond is set to make its local debut in Pretoria, promising a night-long celebration of collaboration and sonic creativity.
Unlike traditional DJ events, Back2Beyond doesn’t rely on a single back-to-back performance. Instead, it features an interlocking chain of rotating DJ duos across multiple stages, creating a continuous musical conversation. This format encourages spontaneity and dialogue, reflecting the diverse identities of South African dance music.
First launched in Cologne in 2024, Back2Beyond has reimagined electronic music performance by pairing DJs in ever-changing configurations. While revolutionary in Europe, this approach is second nature in South Africa, where music has always thrived on shared creativity — from Zulu call-and-response and apartheid-era jazz to Gqom collectives in the townships and multi-artist collaborations in Amapiano.
The local line-up pays homage to this collaborative tradition:
- KMAT – An Amapiano innovator, KMAT blends electronic textures with township rhythms, taking her authentic sound to audiences across Africa and the globe.
- Dlala Thukzin – Known for pushing Gqom boundaries, Dlala Thukzin merges traditional Gqom with 3-step and Gqom-tech sounds, emphasizing the collective nature of South African dance music.
- Major League DJz – This iconic Amapiano duo treats music as a dialogue, exploring Afro-house and Afro-tech while championing African sounds worldwide.
- Sun-El Musician – An Afro-house visionary, Sun-El has crafted a melodic, African Electronic Dance Music identity, carrying South Africa’s collaborative ethos to global dancefloors.
012 Central in Pretoria’s city center offers the perfect backdrop — a raw, authentic space where the focus is on artistry over spectacle. Its atmosphere mirrors Back2Beyond’s ethos: stripping away ego to let the music and shared creativity shine.
Red Bull Back2Beyond aims to highlight South Africa’s diverse dance music landscape, from Afro-house and Amapiano to Gqom and 3-step. It’s a showcase of the country’s position as the epicenter of African dance culture, celebrating the collaborative energy that has long defined South African music.
With Amapiano and Gqom now influencing global dancefloors, Back2Beyond’s South African debut is more than an event — it’s a homecoming, honoring the country as the birthplace of the collective spirit that powers this revolutionary format.
