Unlike traditional DJ events, Back2Beyond doesn’t rely on a single back-to-back performance. Instead, it features an interlocking chain of rotating DJ duos across multiple stages, creating a continuous musical conversation. This format encourages spontaneity and dialogue, reflecting the diverse identities of South African dance music.
First launched in Cologne in 2024, Back2Beyond has reimagined electronic music performance by pairing DJs in ever-changing configurations. While revolutionary in Europe, this approach is second nature in South Africa, where music has always thrived on shared creativity — from Zulu call-and-response and apartheid-era jazz to Gqom collectives in the townships and multi-artist collaborations in Amapiano.
