1 Mpho Sebina was born in Botswana.
2 She is currently 31 years old.
3 Sebina started doing music covers and writing music while obtaining her honours degree in international business in Malaysia, where she studied for five years.
4 After graduating, she worked for three years in advertising and hated it. She then quit her corporate job to go pursue her musical ambitions.
5 She dropped her first EP titled Neo in 2017 and her debut album Lora in November 2020. “Both offerings are just a culmination of me. What makes me and inspires me. You can hear a lot of my influences in the music because I grew up on the sounds of Sade and Boom Shaka,” Sebina explained.
6 Most if not all of her singles are sung in Setswana language. “I think it’s important for us Africans to preserve and embrace our cultures for the next generations, and language is an aspect of my culture that I can express through music,” she said.
7 She runs one of the most successful music showcase events in the form of Naked Soul Sessions (with Jade Solomon of course).
8 Mpho Sebina is the name on almost all amapiano fans’ playlists all thanks to Major League DJz’s smash hit Dinaledi. That song changed the Botswana-born musician’s life for the better.
9 Sebina connected with Major League DJz through DM. “They (Major League DJz) had tweeted me that they are huge fans of my work and I loved their song Slyza Tsotsi. So, I decided to slide into their DMs saying ‘you like my music, where is the work?’ They sent me the instrumental for Dinaledi and we recorded that song,” she explained.
10 Since Dinaledi dropped last year, many upcoming collaborations have come Sebina’s way. She recently collaborated with DJ and producer Abidoza. She was also part of the Shayna ngeWhite Star music series; a platform where artists perform live and re-connect in the age of Covid-19, and she shared the stage with Langa Mavuso and Yallunder.
