10 Things You Should Know About Leon Lee. If you haven’t heard of the name Leon Lee, his voice should be familiar. He lent his voice in one of the biggest amapiano song till date titled Mang’Dakiwe by DJ Obza. The song went on to achieve immense success and now as he gears up to release his debut album, Dr Lee. The star has been in the music industry for quite some time now.

Here are 10 things you should know about Leon Lee:

1 Leon’s real name is Aaron Mawasha

2 Leon was born iin Seshego, Limpopo, and raised in Soshanguve.

3 Leon Lee has worked with countless musicians and producers since bursting onto the music scene a few years ago. According to Leon Lee. “Working with variety of people helps me to learn more from others and gain some skills and knowledge. We learn everyday, especially in this industry.”

4 His first taste of the music industry was as the lead singer for Jika Boys back in 2014. The group, consisted of two vocalists Leon (Aaron Makgaba), TSL (Jacob Mahlangu) and a drummer TJ (ThembaDlamini) and were signed to Kalawa Jazzme. Some of their well-known anthems included Jika, Khumbulekhaya, Belinda and Baby Don’t Lie To Me.

5 Leon Lee is proudly representing where he comes from. Speaking to Reckord publication back in 2018, he mentioned that he has always loved recording in Sepedi and is happy to be nominated with Sepedi house greats. “Though I have moved from Limpopo to Pretoria, I have stuck to singing in Sepedi because I feel comfortable in my mother tongue. There’s really a gap in the industry, we don’t have too many Sepedi house artists.”

6 Leon was nominated for his single Malavo and Baile, a song by DJRedCarpert & Cadpdafresh in which he features, at the  Sepedi Music Awards (SEMA) under best house music gong category.

7 The Soshanguve vocalist is said to have recorded over 200 songs for the project to be released under record label Progressive Records. He was nominated alongside stiff competition from other Sepedi house artists like King Monada, Master KG, Mr Lacoste, King Salama and Cutjolicious.

8 His releases his EP, Dr Lee in March. The 6-track EP is a celebration of his knack for originality. In an interview with IOL publication in March this year, Leon Lee described his latest music offering as a ‘new flavour of amapiano’. “As a vocalist I heal people through music. Therefore, I play the same role as that of a doctor, hence the title Dr Lee,” he said while elaborating on the title.

9 His secret to remaining relevant is to “be humble, business-minded, creative, understanding, learning and remaining focused. Knowing who I’m and where I come from is what keep me moving forward,” he said. Leon Lee also has advise for others in the music industry. “Don’t sleep on your dreams. Your work is your bread; know your customers (fans), listen to them, give them love and never judge them. Most important, always respect their opinion.”

10 As his 2020 hit single Mang’ Dakiwe, with DJ Obza, reached 2 million views on YouTube, Leon Lee announced the release of his new EP (Extended Play) Dr Lee.
