Tyla Snubbed with Zero Nominations for the 2025 Grammys

As the 2025 Grammy Awards approach, many South African fans were eagerly anticipating recognition for Tyla, the breakout star whose global rise has been impossible to ignore. Tyla, whose smash hit “Water” earned her a Grammy earlier in her career, was expected to receive multiple nominations this year, especially given her successes and growing presence in the international music scene. However, to the surprise of many, the singer, known for her unique blend of pop amapiano, did not receive a single nomination for the 2025 ceremony.

Tyla had already made waves on the global stage, not only as a singer but also as a trendsetter within the African music industry. Her previous Grammy win, where she secured the first-ever Best African Music award, solidified her status as one of Africa’s premier artists. Fans hoped she would continue her Grammy streak with her debut album, which she submitted for multiple categories, including Best R&B Album and Best Progressive R&B Album.

Despite her successes in South Africa, where she won four prestigious South African Music Awards (SAMAs), her album didn’t manage to earn any recognition at the 2025 Grammys. Many were surprised by this, given that the album, with its fusion of Afrobeat and R&B, has received widespread acclaim. Critics and fans alike had expected the album to at least be considered for Best R&B Album, a category Tyla had targeted after establishing herself as an artist capable of crossing borders and genres.

The 2025 Grammy snub has also sparked discussions about the challenges African artists face in getting recognition from the Recording Academy. Many are questioning whether the Grammys are truly open to representing a more diverse range of sounds and talents. Tyla’s situation echoes the struggles faced by other international artists, including Nigerian superstar Tems, who has also made significant strides in the U.S. music scene and applied for several categories this year.

Though Tyla’s Grammy snub has left a bitter taste for many of her fans, it is important to remember that the Grammy Awards are just one measure of success. Her impact on the global music industry, particularly in bridging African music with global pop amapiano scenes, continues to grow. With her undeniable talent and strong international fanbase, it’s likely Tyla will see many more accolades in the future—Grammys or not.
