After years of making his mark as an MC, DJ and entertainer, Uncool MC has officially entered a new chapter of his career with the release of his debut EP, Sesikude, through gamma.
Meaning “we have come far”, Sesikude is a reflection of the journey that has shaped Uncool MC, born Thando Sibeko, from his childhood in Kwa-Thema, east of Johannesburg, to moving up north, building relationships within the music industry and eventually travelling the world through his craft.
The seven-track project also represents an important transition for the artist. Having spent years behind the microphone as an MC and working alongside some of the biggest names in the industry, Uncool MC is now placing more of his personal story into his music as a performing artist, DJ and recording artist.
Speaking about the meaning behind the project, Uncool MC says Sesikude captures the different stages of his musical journey.
“The title meaning is centred around the journey I have taken through my art of music. This is a reflection of my decision to transition from an MC into a full performing artist and DJ. I’ve decided to share my story of my experiences throughout my childhood memories, growing up in Kwa-Thema and moving up north to rub shoulders with my fellow colleagues in the industry and going on to travel the world,” he says.
His years of collaborations also helped shape the direction of the EP. Through working with different artists and producers, Uncool MC discovered elements of his own artistry that he wanted to develop further.
“Throughout the years of collaborations, I identified certain elements of myself that I saw as my strength to be able to start putting together my own music, which I later decided to express into a story that I’d put into a project. This means everything to me because I put my all in order for people to experience Uncool MC the artist,” he says.
The journey towards Sesikude began with the release of “Setla” on 4 September. Featuring DJ Maphorisa, Focalistic and Ntsako XVI, the single introduced listeners to the energy behind the project and has since reached the No. 1 position on South African radio while continuing to chart.
Ahead of the EP’s release, Uncool MC hosted a listening session at CÉ LA VI in Sandton, where media and industry guests gathered to experience the project. He also performed “Setla” live during the event.
With performances at major events including Cotton Fest, Piano People, Afro Nation and Fact Durban Rocks, alongside more than 140 million Spotify streams across his own releases and collaborations, Uncool MC has already built an impressive foundation.
Now, Sesikude allows him to tell his story in his own voice.
“I want people to take positivity, endurance and consistency from the project, cause those are the elements that helped me come this far in this journey,” he says.
With Sesikude, Uncool MC celebrates how far he has come while opening the door to the next chapter of his evolution as an artist.
