South African amapiano artist Toss has sparked widespread concern on social media after alleging that he lost close to R20,000 through what he described as a scam linked to the Uber Eats application.
The uMlando hitmaker recently took to social media in a now-deleted video to share his experience and warn others about the alleged incident. According to Toss, the situation happened a few days before he decided to speak publicly about it. He explained that he felt compelled to raise awareness after learning that several other people had allegedly experienced similar problems.
“I got scammed close to R20,000 a few days ago through Uber Eats,” Toss said in the video. “The reason why I’m making a video about it is because when I went to report it, I was told there are a lot of people who reported they went through the same thing.”
The artist added that some of his friends had also allegedly encountered similar incidents involving suspicious transactions. Toss expressed concern about the financial impact such losses could have on ordinary people.
“Someone losing R20,000 would have messed them up a bit harder, so we don’t want it to get to that point,” he said.
Following Toss’s statements, social media users flooded online platforms with reactions, with many sharing their own alleged experiences involving unusual or unauthorised transactions. The conversation quickly gained traction, with users debating online security, digital payment safety, and the importance of protecting banking details linked to delivery applications.
South African DJ Thabo Smol also weighed in on the matter, saying he had noticed increasing complaints and concerns from users regarding similar incidents.
As the issue gained attention online, Uber Eats responded to media inquiries and confirmed that the company is currently investigating the matter. In an official statement, the company said it had already contacted Toss directly regarding the allegations.
“We are aware of the matter raised online and have been in direct contact with the individual involved. A full investigation is under way,” Uber Eats said.
The company further emphasized that user safety and account security remain a priority. Uber Eats encouraged customers who notice suspicious activity on their accounts to immediately report the issue through official support channels and contact their banks if they suspect their payment details may have been compromised.
The incident has since sparked an important conversation around cybersecurity and online payment protection, with many users urging digital platforms to strengthen fraud prevention systems.
