South African producer and DJ Airburn Sounds is preparing to ignite dance floors with his highly anticipated new single “Amahemhem,” a vibrant Amapiano track that blends playful storytelling with irresistible rhythms. As excitement builds ahead of the release, the producer recently shared insight into the inspiration and creative process behind the song during a conversation with The Yanos Magazine.

Born Thabo Mahundla, Airburn Sounds has steadily carved out a name for himself within the Amapiano scene. Raised between Alexandra and Tembisa townships, with roots in Limpopo, the Johannesburg-born artist discovered his love for music at a young age. As a teenager, he began entering and winning DJ competitions, a journey that eventually led him to become one of the emerging producers shaping the genre’s sound today.

Q1: So… what’s the vibe behind “Amahemhem”?

A: Honestly, it’s just us having fun with real-life situations. You know how people love to talk? We were like, cool… let’s give them a soundtrack while they do it. It’s playful, it’s cheeky, but still very Amapiano at heart.

Q2: The song kinda calls out gossipers – were you guys venting?

A: Not even venting, more like laughing it off. Everyone deals with rumors at some point, so instead of being serious about it, we flipped it into something you can dance to. Like, okay sharp… talk your talk, we’ll keep moving.

Q3: The collaboration lineup is stacked! How did that come together?

A: It was one of those “everyone brings their flavour” situations. Mulest Vankay, Mellow & Sleazy, Officixl RSA, Scotts Maphuma, Boontle… each person added something unique. No pressure vibes, just good energy in the studio as usual and it all clicked.

Q4: What can fans expect when they hear the track for the first time?

A: First thing? That bounce. The lyirics grabs you with Officixl’s intro. The  is an element of Kwaito, and before you know it, you’re already moving. Then the message hits, but itss not blatant or in your face- just very playful. Then Scotts adds his signature and flavour.

Q6: You’ve had a solid run with tracks like “Tshwala” and “Crush Yam”—where does “Amahemhem” sit for you?

A: It feels like a natural next step. Those songs opened doors and got people locked into the sound, and “Amahemhem” just builds on that energy. It’s still catchy, still for the streets and the dance floor, but with a bit more personality and storytelling.

Q7: If people take one thing away from this song, what should it be?

A: Don’t take life too seriously, especially when it comes to what people say about you. Turn the noise into something fun. Laugh, dance, keep it moving… that’s really the spirit of “Amahemhem.”

With its infectious energy and relatable message, “Amahemhem” is poised to become another standout moment for Airburn Sounds in the ever-growing Amapiano movement.
