The music world is set to bid farewell to one of its brightest stars, DJ Sumbody, with the release of his posthumous song, “Somebody Nice,” scheduled for November 15. The track was recorded just a day before his tragic passing.
DJ Sumbody, born Oupa John Sefoka, was a beloved figure in the South African music scene. He gained widespread recognition for his chart-topping hits such as Ayepyep and Monate Mpolaye, tracks that featured artists like Cassper Nyovest and Thebe. Additionally, DJ Sumbody was a successful businessman, co-owning the popular Ayepyep Lifestyle venues in Tshwane and Cape Town, which became cultural hubs for fans of Amapiano music and lifestyle.
“Somebody Nice,” which features artists Murumba Pitch and Junior Taurus, is the final collaboration of DJ Sumbody before his untimely death. In an interview with Daily Sun, Junior Taurus (real name Tshepo Mosidi) spoke about the emotional weight of the track, explaining that the song was the last one DJ Sumbody recorded before his passing. “Listening to it now brings so much emotion because it was the last song he recorded,” Taurus shared.
According to Junior Taurus, the late DJ’s influence extended far beyond his music. “He believed in culture and was behind the success of liquor brands that people didn’t originally buy. He made them popular, and now they’re widely consumed,” Taurus added, reflecting on DJ Sumbody’s role in shaping not only the music scene but also broader aspects of popular culture.
DJ Sumbody’s legacy continues to inspire, and with this final song, his contribution to the South African music culture will forever be remembered.
