Maphorisa Claims Amapiano Awards Are A Mistake. The first annual South African Amapiano Awards were announced earlier this week but there is already drama following the release of the nominations list. Riky Rick, Uncle Vinny are some of the names that made it to the list for the inaugural SA Amapiano Awards (SAAPA). Amapiano music lovers have complained that the pioneers of the genre have not been nominated while “wave riders” made the list.
Maphorisa has reacted yet again to the Amapiano awards, and this time with laughing emojies. Phori took to social media stating that he just realised that the awards are an accident. “I realised that these amapiano awards its n accident (laughing emojis)mind my language,” he wrote. See tweet:
Maphorisa as one of the forefront and pioneers of amapiano was expected to dominate or rather secure more nominations, and one that was not the case, his fans agreed with him. One social media user wrote, “The nominees list absurd some deserve to be there but some are just there because of how they trended some artists talent was not taken into recognition.”
Organisers have promised that winners will receive R10,000 in each category, while a grand prize of R50,000 will be handed to the artist that will scoop song of the year. According to Charmaine Mthethwa, SAAPA vice-president of communication, the 20-category awards were founded and organised by a novice entity known as Amapiano Governing Body. The organisation is made up of “industry professionals and stakeholders who are passionate about the genre and felt the need to award its creators”.
Mthethwa further said that the organisation will reveal their sponsors for the public-voted awards in due course. “The governing body of the SA Amapiano Awards felt like Amapiano was not receiving the full acknowledgment it deserves. These young children work so hard and despite Amapiano having existed for nearly a decade now, there hasn’t been an awards show that has fully embraced their talents,” she added.
