Scotts Maphuma’s Awkward Performance At Apparent Carling Black Label Event Gets Fans Talking

Scotts Maphuma has sparked a debate on social media after footage of his performance at what appeared to be a Carling Black Label corporate event circulated online. The clip showed the Amapiano star performing before a seated, relatively subdued audience, leaving fans divided over whether the booking was suited to his performance style.

The footage, which made its way onto X, captured the artist on stage at a venue featuring Carling Black Label branding and a “Champion Coach Experience” backdrop. A host could also be seen working the microphone as Maphuma performed in a red-lit setting, with the audience remaining seated rather than responding with the energetic atmosphere often associated with Amapiano performances.

The contrast between the artist’s stage presence and the crowd’s reaction quickly became a talking point. For some social media users, the moment appeared awkward, with questions raised about who had organised the booking and whether the event’s format was the right fit for the performer.

However, not everyone viewed the situation negatively. One fan suggested that the quieter crowd might not necessarily be a problem for Maphuma, pointing to previous moments in which the artist’s reactions to enthusiastic fans had become a topic of discussion.

“Based on how I’ve seen him react when fans get excited to see him, this is probably the kind of audience he prefers. He might actually be happy with it, and we wouldn’t even know,” the user wrote.

The comment offered a different perspective on the viral clip, suggesting that audiences should not automatically interpret a lack of visible excitement as a sign that a performance has gone wrong. Corporate events can have a different atmosphere from concerts and club appearances, where attendees are often more inclined to sing along, dance and interact with performers.

Another social media user used the moment to raise concerns about opportunities within the entertainment industry, arguing that other performers deserve greater access to corporate bookings.

“Mind you, we have real artists and vocalists who deserve these opportunities,” the user commented.

The remark added another dimension to the discussion, shifting attention from the performance itself to the wider question of how artists are selected for paid appearances and whether bookings reflect the range of talent available in South Africa.

While the clip has attracted criticism and jokes, it has also highlighted how quickly short performance videos can shape online conversations about musicians. A brief recording may capture only one moment of an event, without showing the full audience experience or the circumstances surrounding the booking.

For now, Scotts Maphuma’s corporate performance continues to generate reactions, with fans debating the suitability of the setting, the crowd’s response and the opportunities available to artists in the industry.
