South African superstar Tyla is taking another step towards empowering the next generation of artists with the announcement of her “That Girl” Music Scholarship. The two-time Grammy Award-winning singer has partnered with Epic Records to provide financial support to 10 young women pursuing music degrees, with priority given to students attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in the United States.
Known internationally for her chart-topping music, including the global hit “Water,” which peaked at No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100, Tyla continues to expand her influence beyond the stage. Through this latest initiative, the singer is creating opportunities for aspiring musicians who need financial assistance to pursue their education and work towards careers in the music industry.
The scholarship takes its name from “THAT GIRL,” a track featured on Tyla’s recently released second studio album, APOP*. The programme will award $5,000 each to 10 eligible students who demonstrate financial need and academic excellence. Recipients will be selected from qualifying colleges and universities located near selected stops on Tyla’s current APOP World Tour.
The initiative will reach students in six US markets: New York City, Washington, D.C., Tampa, Atlanta, Houston and Los Angeles. One recipient will be selected from each American location, while four additional scholarships will be awarded to students in South Africa, Tyla’s home country.
In addition to receiving financial assistance, the selected students will enjoy an exclusive tour experience that includes concert tickets and a meet-and-greet with Tyla. The opportunity offers the beneficiaries a chance to connect with the award-winning artist while celebrating their own musical ambitions.
To qualify, applicants must be at least 18 years old and enrolled as full-time undergraduate students. South African applicants must be entering or currently enrolled in an eligible programme at the time of the local concert. Applicants must be pursuing music or arts-related majors and submit a one-page personal statement, a 30-second video, an academic transcript and proof of financial need.
The announcement comes during an important year for Tyla, who released APOP* in July 2026. The album features “CHANEL,” “IS IT” and “THAT GIRL,” further showcasing the singer’s evolving sound and international appeal. The project debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard World Albums chart, adding another milestone to her growing career.
Tyla’s latest move also echoes a message she shared at the 2025 GLAMOUR Women of the Year Awards, where she highlighted the importance of sisterhood and declared, “The girls are dominating.”
With the “That Girl” Music Scholarship, Tyla is putting those words into action. By investing in young women pursuing music education, she is helping create pathways for emerging talent and reinforcing the importance of supporting the next generation of female artists.
