Thatohatsi and The Vocals Unite Amapiano and Powerful Harmonies on ‘Mashup Masters’ Episode 5

Mashup Masters returns with its final Episode 5, bringing together two very different approaches to South African music as rising Amapiano vocalist Thatohatsi joins forces with powerhouse ensemble The Vocals.

The latest episode continues the series’ celebration of unexpected musical combinations, pairing Thatohatsi’s distinctive Amapiano vocal style with The Vocals’ dynamic harmonies and commanding group sound. The collaboration creates an exciting meeting point between the rhythm-driven energy of Amapiano and the expressive power of layered vocal performances.

At the centre of the episode is a challenge that has become one of the defining elements of Mashup Masters: bringing artists from different musical backgrounds together and encouraging them to find common ground. Thatohatsi brings her contemporary Amapiano energy, unique phrasing and melodic approach, while The Vocals contribute their collective strength, rich harmonies and ability to transform a song into a powerful vocal experience.

The result is a collaboration that highlights the versatility of South Africa’s music landscape while demonstrating what can happen when artists are given the freedom to step outside their usual creative environments. The track also carries a spiritual quality, adding emotional depth to the performance and allowing both acts to connect through the message of the music.

For Thatohatsi, working alongside such a powerful vocal ensemble offered a chance to approach Amapiano from an entirely different perspective.

“I’m used to letting the beat lead me, so working with such powerful voices gave me a completely different way to think about the music,” she said.

The Vocals also welcomed the opportunity to experiment with a genre outside their established sound.

“Amapiano has such a unique energy, and we wanted to see how we could make that energy work with our voices,” the ensemble explained.

Episode 5 perfectly demonstrates the core idea behind Mashup Masters: experimentation can uncover unexpected connections between artists, genres and audiences. By placing musicians with contrasting identities in the same creative space, the series creates opportunities for new sounds and collaborations that might not otherwise happen.

With 10 South African artists featured across five genre mashups, Season 2 of Mashup Masters celebrates the depth and diversity of the country’s music industry. Each episode presents a fresh combination while challenging artists to take creative risks without losing the qualities that make their individual styles unique.

As the second season comes to a close, Thatohatsi and The Vocals provide a fitting finale, proving that when Amapiano’s infectious rhythm meets powerful harmonies, the possibilities are endless.
