DJ Maphorisa has ignited widespread discussion across social media after announcing that he is stepping away from Amapiano, the genre he helped propel to international recognition. The award-winning producer and DJ made the revelation on Instagram, confidently declaring that Amapiano is “in good hands” as he turns his focus back to Afro-inspired sounds — the genre where his journey first began.

Maphorisa shared a video of himself on Instagram captioned with the words, “Back in my element Afro.” He further fueled speculation in a follow-up message, writing: “Amapiano it’s in good hands I’m going back to my roots whr it all started AFRO!!!!!!” The statement immediately caught the attention of fans and industry peers alike, triggering excitement, curiosity, and debate.

Several prominent figures in the music industry showed public support for his decision. Shimza reacted enthusiastically, commenting, “Areye!!!!!!” accompanied by hearts and rocket emojis, while Zakes Bantwini added, “Woza baba …” DJ Zinhle also chimed in with a supportive “Let’s go,” signaling strong backing from fellow tastemakers within the Afro-house and Afro-tech space.

However, reactions became more mixed once the news reached X (formerly Twitter). While many fans welcomed Maphorisa’s return to Afro-centric sounds, others questioned whether the move was driven more by business strategy than creative expression. Some users argued that Afro-house and Afro-tech currently offer greater international touring opportunities and financial rewards.

One user claimed, “Afro-House and Afro-Tech is the only ticket to get more gigs internationally. That is why Black Coffee and Shimza are focused on that genre. This is a business move for Phori.” Another echoed the sentiment, saying, “Afro tech is on the rise and has serious money. Phori is following the money.” More critical voices went further, bluntly stating, “Amapiano is dying anyway.”

Despite the divided opinions, DJ Maphorisa’s influence on South Africa’s music scene remains undeniable. He has consistently demonstrated versatility, moving seamlessly between Afro-house, Afro-pop, gqom, hip hop, and Amapiano throughout his career. His ability to evolve with changing musical trends has been a key factor in his longevity and global relevance.

Whether this announcement signals a permanent departure from Amapiano or simply a new creative chapter remains unclear. What is certain, however, is that DJ Maphorisa continues to shape conversations — and sounds — within the local and global music landscape.
