Boohle On Amapiano’s Current Reign Over SA Hip-Hop

South Africa’s music landscape continues to be defined by the dominance of amapiano, a genre that has not only captured local audiences but is also making waves on international stages.

In the midst of amapiano’s rise, questions around the place of hip-hop in South Africa have surfaced, sparking ongoing debates among artists, fans, and industry figures. Boohle, one of the voices shaping contemporary music, recently weighed in on this discussion during an interview with Hype Magazine.

“There’s nothing wrong,” Boohle explained when asked what she thinks is holding South African hip-hop back compared to amapiano. “With music it’s just seasonal. The piano is dominating right now because of social media, the trending sounds for dances online, so when people hear the music they immediately start wanting the songs.”

Her perspective reflects a broader understanding of how genres shift in popularity over time. The interviewer drew a direct comparison between amapiano’s current global spotlight and hip-hop’s quieter presence in the industry. Boohle’s response pushed back against the idea that hip-hop is in decline, instead suggesting that trends are cyclical and influenced heavily by technology and cultural moments.

The rise of amapiano has been powered by its synergy with social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram, where its upbeat rhythms and danceable beats have become the soundtrack to countless viral clips. Boohle emphasized that this digital boost plays a huge role in shaping what dominates charts and stages today. In contrast, hip-hop, while still producing talented acts and strong records, hasn’t benefited in the same way from these social media trends in recent years.

Still, her take serves as a reminder that genres in South Africa often move in waves. Hip-hop previously enjoyed a golden era in the country with the likes of Nasty C, Cassper Nyovest, AKA, and others leading the charge, and Boohle believes that nothing prevents it from making a strong resurgence when the cycle turns again.

The conversation highlights a fascinating dynamic in South Africa’s music culture, amapiano as the current global export, and hip-hop as a genre that still holds weight and influence but is in a quieter moment. For Boohle, it’s not a matter of competition but a reflection of how music evolves. Both genres, she suggests, have their place, and the industry thrives when they coexist, each enjoying its season.
