In an interview with To The Max Brand Management, Kamo Mphela’s father, Onitias Mphela, delved into various aspects of his daughter’s career, highlighting his role not just as a parent but as a strategic business partner. The conversation touched upon the challenges and triumphs of navigating the entertainment industry, and it was during this discussion that the issue of provocative lyrics was brought up.
He mentioned that during the recording, one of the guys came and asked him if he was comfortable with what her child was singing about in the song.
“Another guy came to me and asked me if I am comfortable with the lyrics of the song, as the song is Jobe unginika kamnandi?”
Mr Mphela answered and said, “What does that mean? Why should I not be comfortable with it? It is a song where she is an artist, she’s allowed to express herself.”
JR supported Mr. Mphela during the conversation, emphasizing that the dad should be comfortable, as he is also in the industry.
Kamo’s dad further mentioned that it is a song and sounds nice to the ears; she is not swearing at anyone or being explicit with the lyrics, unlike the overseas Hip-Hop artist.
“Guys, it sounds nice to the ears, she is not swearing at anyone, she is not being explicit with the lyrics like your Hip-Hop artist overseas.”
He added that Kamo was so comfortable, she did not even bother to ask if her dad was okay with the song’s lyrics. Mr Mphela explained that he knows it is sexual, but the song is not explicit or insulting.
“I am glad that she was comfortable with me, and she did not even bother to ask eish baba are you okay with Jobe unginika kamnandi.”
After all that, the song became a hit, surpassing a million views on YouTube. Beyond YouTube, the “Jobe” challenge was a phenomenon on platforms like TikTok and Instagram. This is where the song’s cultural impact was most visible. The song was a major trend, with millions of users creating content and sharing it with their followers.
