South African Amapiano star Scotts Maphuma is once again under fire from the public for his repeated disregard toward fans. The Yebo Lapho hitmaker, known for his flashy lifestyle and chart-topping tracks, has sparked outrage online after being captured in a now-viral video ignoring a group of eager supporters.
The footage, posted by gossip blog Maphepha Ndaba, shows Maphuma cruising through Soshanguve in his brand-new BMW worth R3.5 million on Mandela Day (18 July 2025). While his visit was reportedly part of a community outreach effort for Mandela Day—giving back to the less fortunate—it was overshadowed by his refusal to acknowledge or engage with fans who had gathered to see him.
In the clip, the artist appears unfazed as the crowd cheers and waves at him. Instead of stopping to greet or even acknowledge them with a simple wave, Maphuma remained inside his vehicle and drove off. This sparked widespread backlash from netizens who accused him of arrogance and forgetting the very people who helped build his success.
One user commented, “Oh, mara, just a hi, thank you guys for the support, aii I don’t know how to defend him anymore.” Another wrote, “Kanti, where did he grow up? He’s acting like he’s always been in the burbs and not used to the beautiful township voices. Scotts deserves a cup and a medal for being the meanest person on earth.”
This is not the first time Maphuma has been called out for displaying what many call a “stinking attitude.” Just months ago, he faced similar backlash for ignoring supporters at a gig, and after being widely criticized, he apologized and promised to do better. Unfortunately, this latest incident suggests otherwise.
Despite his philanthropic intentions in Soshanguve, the overshadowing of his community service by his cold interaction — or lack thereof — with fans has reignited a conversation about celebrity responsibility, humility, and gratitude.
Fans are once again debating whether to continue supporting an artist who seemingly forgets the importance of genuine connection with the very people who uplift him.
As his music continues to dominate the charts, his relationship with the public appears to be on shaky ground — and this time, forgiveness might not come so easily.
