A legal storm is brewing for Amapiano sensation MaWhoo, as Blue Screen Entertainment files a R1 million defamation lawsuit against her and her company, MaWhoo Entertainment PTY LTD, at the KwaZulu-Natal High Court in Durban.

MaWhoo, born Thandeka Ngema, is being sued after allegedly making defamatory remarks in a voice note regarding her scheduled performance at the Durban Music Festival held on 3 May 2025. The event, which featured U.S. rapper Rick Ross as the headliner, was a major date on the local music calendar. However, MaWhoo’s involvement has now become the centre of a growing legal dispute.

According to court documents cited by Sunday World, Blue Screen Entertainment alleges that despite MaWhoo being paid in full for her performance, she proceeded to make “reckless and unfounded statements” that the company claims severely damaged its reputation and integrity within the entertainment industry.

The company initially issued a letter of demand to the singer on 16 May 2025, instructing her to retract the statement and issue a formal apology by 19 May. The documents claim that MaWhoo failed to comply with this request. “The Defendant has failed, refused and/or neglected to make such apology,” states the court filing.

As a result, Blue Screen Entertainment is seeking damages of R1 million, along with interest calculated at 15.5% per annum and legal costs on an attorney-client scale.

The lawsuit adds to a growing list of challenges for artists navigating the complex world of performance contracts and public accountability. The entertainment company argues that MaWhoo’s statements not only affected their business reputation but may have also impacted future partnerships and sponsorships.
