South African singer Aymos released his highly anticipated album Impilo on 30 August 2024, offering fans a deep reflection on his life’s journey, challenges, and Christian upbringing. Known for his soulful sound and chart-topping hits, Aymos once again delivers a project that speaks to his personal experiences, while incorporating diverse collaborations with artists like Reese Madlisa and Sha Sha.

Aymos, whose real name is Babili Amos Shili, is no stranger to the spotlight. His breakout moment came with the hit song Emcimbini, which cemented his place in South Africa’s music industry. Speaking to Briefly News about the release of Impilo, Aymos explained that the album is deeply influenced by his Christian background and life’s complexities. “I was born and bred in a Christian family, where I attended church almost daily. So that was the solid foundation of who I am and what I stand for, and it also shaped the kind of music and the context that I give out in my music,” he said.

Reflecting on the challenges that shaped Impilo, Aymos described the album as a reflection of life’s intricate journey. “My life hasn’t been a smooth and easy journey. Hence, even the artwork looks a bit complicated. I believe life is complicated; no one has figured it out, and my making the album has been the experience of a lifetime. It hasn’t been a smooth journey, to be honest with you.”

The album features a rich tapestry of sounds and collaborations, carefully chosen to align with the themes of each track. Aymos shared that his selection of collaborators was intentional, with each artist matching the tone and message of the songs. “The collaborations were selected based on the music, the lyrics context, or the song’s direction,” he explained.

For instance, he worked with Reese Madlisa for a track that had a more commercial appeal, while collaborating with Sha Sha on a song like 10,000 Yey’nkomo due to its alignment with themes of lobolo, reflecting Sha Sha’s age and life stage. These thoughtful pairings have resulted in an album that is both sonically diverse and thematically rich.

Impilo is not just an album, but a musical representation of Aymos’ life, struggles, and triumphs. His ability to blend his personal story with universal themes makes it an album that resonates deeply with his listeners, further solidifying his place as one of South Africa’s most talented artists.
