“I Won’t Forget The Day I Gave Kabza Sponono” – Phori On His Impact On Amapiano. It’s safe to say that one of South Africa’s most popular Amapiano duo is DJ Maphorisa and Kabza de Small, more commonly called the Scorpion Kings. The two first gained attention individually before forming Scorpion Kings. The single Umshove, released in 2018, helped kick-start Kabza’s career and made a name for himself in the Amapiano genre.

It wasn’t the same for Maphorisa, whose reputation stemmed from producing some of South Africa’s biggest hit songs such as Kwesta’s 2016 Ngud’ featuring Cassper Nyovest. Maphorisa also produced Busiswa’s Lahla and co-produced multi-award-winning American rapper Drake’s 2016 Afrobeat hit, One Dance.

Maphorisa has indeed changed the amapiano game and the careers of many amapiano artists who jumped into the genre. He took to social media to dismiss the claims of being a gatekeeper and also to give himself a tap on the shoulder for his impact in the genre.

“Won’t forget the day I gave Kabza Sponono it change the whole african movement Use ur brains 🧠 Wizkid Burna boyMadumoney CasspeeNyovi in one song a u crazy Porry gatekeeping ????? Sponono was the birth of Asake new sound it opened doors for all.look at how Africans dance now ??? I Will definitely count myself in with or without u,” he wrote. Check it out:
